“Adrian!” Samantha suddenly grabbed his hand, her voice trembling. “Do you remember the Rivers family in its prime? Back then, you were Stonebridge’s most famous attorney. Conrad was famous across Stonebridge; Lucas was a brilliant young scientist with a future wide open before him…”

“Enough!” Adrian yanked his hand away, pain flashing in his eyes.

Conrad was now locked away in a psychiatric hospital, unable even to recall his own name. Boone was behind bars after stealing classified research, sentenced to ten years.

Samantha stepped closer, the faint scent of roses brushing against him. “It was all because of Sloane… She brought the misfortune back with her. She ruined me, ruined our whole family.”

“But she…” Adrian started, only to falter.

Samantha rose on her toes, her lips brushing close to his ear. “Adrian… you’ve always loved me most, ever since we were children…” Her breath was warm against his skin as her fingers slid over the wrinkles of his tie. “Every time I was bullied, you were the one who protected me…”

Adrian went rigid, a long-buried feeling surging inside him. He remembered all too clearly the shameful moment at twenty years old when he had stumbled upon Samantha bathing. He had fled the Rivers estate in a panic and spent three whole days hiding at a friend’s house, too afraid to return.

“Look at us now,” Samantha murmured, her hand drifting down to rest against his chest, feeling the frantic beat of his heart. “We’ve lost everything, while Sloane just keeps getting ahead. Doesn’t that tear at you? Don’t you want to take back what was ours?”

Adrian’s control cracked. He seized her hand, his voice hoarse. “What do you want me to do?”

A victorious smile curled across Samantha’s lips. She slipped her hand free and turned toward the dressing table, letting the strap of her nightgown slide deliberately off her shoulder.

Through the mirror, she studied Adrian’s reaction, lips parting slightly.

“Adrian, I hear Sloane is at the military hospital treating those patients with memory loss.” She picked up a brush and slowly drew it through her long hair. “I want to know… how the treatment is going.”

Adrian’s gaze followed her every move, his throat tightening as he swallowed hard. “Why do you want to know that?”

Samantha spun on her heel, the hem of her nightgown swirling around her. Barefoot, she crossed the room to him, her fingertip tracing the knot of his tie. “Isn’t Sloane supposed to be the great ‘miracle doctor? If she fails, we can use that against her.” Her hand drifted lower, circling lightly across his tense chest. “Besides…” She leaned in close, her breath hot against his neck. “You’ve always been the best at digging up evidence.”

Adrian’s breathing grew heavy. His composure unraveled under her touch and her familiar scent. He caught her hand, his voice ragged. “All you want… is information?”
