Technicians in the surveillance room watched him move from screen to screen, the cameras picking up every detail, down to the sweat at his temple.
In the surveillance room, technicians tracked his steps across a dozen screens. The cameras caught everything, right down to the nervous sweat glistening at his temple.
As he passed down the corridor, a nurse pushing a medication cart “accidentally” bumped into him. Bottles clattered to the floor. She apologized in a rush, crouching to gather them. In the motion, her arm brushed against his suit, knocking loose the second button on his jacket.
Adrian didn’t notice. He adjusted his basket and kept walking.
The fallen button was swiftly swept away by a janitor, then shipped off to waste disposal along with the rest of the hospital trash.
Back at the Rivers estate, Samantha’s eyes widened as the surveillance feed on her screen suddenly went black. She pounded the keys furiously, trying to restore the connection, but nothing worked.
“Useless!” she shouted, slamming her hand down and sending the nearest object crashing to the floor.
Adrian straightened his tie and pushed open the door to a patient’s room, still carrying the fruit basket. This time, he truly was visiting-his old college friend Jackson Roberts had been admitted the week before to the hospital with gastrointestinal bleeding from a gastric ulcer, which made for the perfect cover.
“Jackson, how are you feeling?” Adrian set the basket on the nightstand, his eyes flicking briefly toward the hallway outside.
Jackson leaned back against the pillows, still pale. “Better. Hospital food’s too bland, that’s all. But what’s gotten into you? You don’t usually make hospital visits.”
“I heard you were here; thought I’d stop by.” Adrian smiled, settling into the chair. He picked up an apple and began slicing it casually. “By the way, I heard this hospital has a special ward… for patients with memory loss?”
The knife paused against the apple. Jackson gave him a curious look. “Yeah, I heard something about that. Why the sudden interest?”
“Oh, I saw a report on the news. And just now in the hall, a couple of doctors in white coats were talking about it, so I figured I’d ask.” Adrian kept his tone light, cutting into the apple again. “So…. still no cure?”
Jackson shook his head. “I’m not sure. I’ve been stuck in this room for days. Haven’t paid attention.” His eyes narrowed slightly, his voice taking on weight. “But that attending physician, Sloane-she’s your sister, isn’t she? Wouldn’t it be easier to just ask her?”
Adrian’s face went rigid. The knife slipped, nearly slicing his finger. Forcing a thin smile, he said, “We… don’t exactly get along.”
Jackson studied him for a moment before speaking, voice pointed. “Adrian, I’ll give you some advice. Mend things with her. Sloane’s more powerful than ever in Stonebridge. One word from her, and your family could rise again.”
