“Are the patients… Are they all right?” The words scraped out of her throat, rough and fragile.

Lucas’s expression darkened. “They’re stable. But you-” His hand brushed the thick bandages wrapped around her right arm. “The damage is severe. Dr. Boston says he doesn’t know how well your arm will

recover.”

Sloane tried to flex her fingers. Pain shot through her hand, sharp and merciless. She closed her eyes and exhaled slowly. “It was worth it.”

Lucas bent down and pulled her into a trembling embrace, holding her as though one wrong move might hurt her. Sloane felt his shoulders tremble against her.

“You idiot…” His voice was muffled against her neck. “If you hadn’t woken up…”

Sloane’s arms circled weakly around his waist. A faint smile tugged at her lips. “Don’t worry. I calculated the dose, I timed the treatment-I knew what I was doing. I was never going to die.”

“Calculated?” Lucas’s head snapped up. His face, usually so composed, was tight with barely contained anger. His voice dropped, rough and low. “You call this calculated?” He yanked up her sleeve, revealing the rows of puncture marks and bruises that marred her arm. “This is your precision?”

His sudden fury stunned her. She instinctively tried to pull her arm back, but his grip only tightened.

“Do you know what it was like,” his voice shook, “when they carried you out unconscious and told me you’d poisoned yourself to test a cure? I would’ve rather you never practiced medicine at all.”

Sloane had never seen him lose control like this. The unflinching Mr. Hawthorne-always so composed, always untouchable-now stood before her with bloodshot eyes and a jaw clenched so hard it trembled.

“Lucas…”

He dropped his forehead onto her uninjured shoulder, his voice muffled and raw. “Sloane, I might be more selfish than you think. I don’t care if the patients live or die. I only care about you.”

She froze. She had never seen him break like this.

“Do you know what those ten days were like?” His gaze lifted to hers, burning with red-rimmed intensity. “Every time a doctor shook his head, I wanted to storm into the lab and smash every vial, burn every sample.”

Sloane opened her mouth to answer, but his hand gently pressed against her lips.

His thumb brushed gently across her lips. “You promised me you wouldn’t take risks. But even then… I knew I couldn’t stop you.”

Her lashes trembled. A single tear slid down her cheek. She lifted her weak left hand and pressed it over his.

“I’m sorry…” Her voice was little more than a whisper. “But I had to do it.”

Lucas drew in a deep breath and pressed her hand against his cheek, clinging to her touch as proof she was
