Chapter 365 The Proposal

“What’s wrong?” Sloane gently patted her back. “Who’s been giving you a hard time?”

Jill jerked upright, dropped into the chair by the bed, and heaved a dramatic sigh. “My parents are working with the Clarks to arrange a marriage between me and Cameron!”

Sloane blinked, her lips curving in amusement. “Isn’t that a good thing? You and Cameron grew up together. You know each other better than anyone.”

“Good thing? No way!” Jill groaned, ruffling her short hair until it stuck up messily. “He’s my friend! Who marries their friend? It’s so awkward!” She started counting on her fingers. “He’s seen me in dinosaur pajamas gnawing on a chicken drumstick. I know he used to wet the bed in grade school. And there are still videos of us pulling each other’s hair when we fought as kids!”

Sloane couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Doesn’t that just prove how close you are?”

“That’s not the point!” Jill’s expression suddenly turned serious. “The problem is, it’s not fair to Cameron. He’s amazing. He should marry some elegant, graceful girl-not a reckless tomboy like me.” She clenched her fists with determination. “For Cameron’s happiness, I have to figure out a way to ruin this engagement!”

Understanding flickered in Sloane’s eyes. She’d noticed long ago the way Cameron looked at Jill during gatherings-that steady, tender gaze was nothing like how you looked at a friend. But she didn’t say it aloud. Instead, she said softly, “Have you even asked Cameron what he wants?”

Jill froze. “Why would I? Obviously, his family’s forcing him too.”

“But what if he feels differently?” Sloane said with quiet weight. “This is about both of you. You should at least talk to him.”

Jill thought about it, then nodded. “You’re right. I’ll ask him later. He’s smart-he might even have a better plan to blow this whole thing up.”

Just then, the door opened again. Lucas walked in carrying a food box, followed by a tall young man—

Cameron himself.

The first thing Cameron did was glance at Jill before setting a fruit basket on the table. “Sloane, I wish you a speedy recovery.”

Sloane caught the tone in his voice and shot Jill a meaningful look. “Thank you.”

The moment Jill saw Cameron, she froze, then marched straight over and grabbed his wrist. “Perfect timing! I need to talk to you.” She turned and waved at Sloane. “Sloane, we’ll be back later!” Without waiting for a response, she pulled Cameron out the door in a hurry.

Cameron stumbled at first but didn’t resist, letting her tug him along. On the way out, he still managed a polite nod toward Sloane. “Take care of yourself.”

Around the corner in the hallway, Jill finally let go and set her hands on her hips. “Cameron, you know our families are trying to set us up, right?”

Cameron adjusted his sleeve where she’d yanked it crooked and nodded. “Yeah. I know.”
