The corners of Cameron’s mouth lifted almost imperceptibly. “So that’s how it is.” He put on a thoughtful expression. “Actually… marrying me wouldn’t be such a bad deal.”

Jill’s eyes widened. “What do you mean?”

“Think about it.” Cameron adjusted his glasses and laid out his reasoning point by point. “If you married someone else, you’d probably be expected to play the picture-perfect wife and mother. But if you married me…” He paused. “You could still lounge around in pajamas while eating junk food, sneak out in the middle of the night for snacks, keep being a little reckless-I promise I wouldn’t interfere.”

Jill blinked, clearly wavering a little. “That… kind of makes sense?”

Cameron pressed his advantage. “And you know how much I hate attending boring social events. If I married some debutante and she forced me to go to banquets every day…” He made a pained face. “But if I married you, we could fake being sick and skip every single one of them.”

Jill couldn’t help laughing. “That actually sounds pretty great!”

“And another thing,” Cameron went on, “you’ve got dirt on me by the handful; you’d never have to worry about me bullying you.”

Jill rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “When you put it that way…”

“But the most important thing is-” Cameron’s gaze softened with sincerity as he looked at her. “You’d never have to pretend around me. Burp if you want, fart if you want; just be yourself.”

Jill punched him on the shoulder. “Who would want to fart in front of you!” But the corners of her mouth had already lifted.

She was laughing when suddenly her smile faded. “But… it wouldn’t be fair to you. You’re so outstanding: you deserve a gentle, caring wife…”

Cameron chuckled lightly. “But that’s not the kind of girl I like.”

Jill imagined him standing beside some demure, ladylike girl, and the image felt completely wrong.

“Exactly,” Cameron spread his hands. “Instead of marrying some stranger from a prominent family, why not marry someone you already know inside and out? At least we walk in step with each other.”

Jill tilted her head at him. “You really mean that?”

He nodded, his tone uncharacteristically serious. “Jill, we’ve known each other for over twenty years. No one in this world understands you better than I do; no one understands me better than you.” He paused. “Doesn’t that make for the best kind of marriage?”

Jill stared at him in a daze. For the first time, the childhood friend she had grown up with seemed somehow different. Sunlight streamed through the hallway windows, painting him in a golden glow; behind the lenses, his eyes were so gentle her heart skipped a beat.

“So then…” Jill’s cheeks turned pink. “Just like that-we go through with it?”

When they returned to the hospital room, Sloane was nibbling at her medicinal food. The moment Jill stepped through the door, she rushed to the bedside, her eyes sparkling. “Sloane! I’ve figured it out!”
