Cameron cleared his throat at just the right moment and stepped inside. “Sloane, I’ll get you some water.” With that, he picked up the kettle and walked out.

Once the door closed, Sloane gave Jill’s palm a gentle squeeze. “Have you really thought this through?”

“Of course!” Jill straightened her back. “I’m not the type to make careless decisions!”

Sloane chuckled softly. She cast a knowing glance at the door. “As long as you’ve made up your mind, that’s what matters.”

“I know exactly what I’m doing.” Jill blinked with certainty.

Just then, Cameron returned carrying the kettle. He poured a glass of water and handed it to Sloane with both hands. “Here, Sloane-your water.”

She accepted the glass but didn’t drink; instead, she looked at Jill. “Jill, could you go to the nurses’ station and ask for a new thermometer? The one just now didn’t seem accurate.”

“Huh? Oh, sure!” Jill leapt to her feet and dashed out in a rush. “I’ll be right back!”

As soon as her footsteps faded down the hall, the smile vanished from Sloane’s face. She set the glass dowr on the bedside table with a soft thud. “Cameron, I have something to ask you-and you must answer honestly.”

Cameron stood tall, his gaze steady behind the lenses of his glasses. “Go ahead, Sloane.”

“Jill calls me her sister, and I’ve loved her like my own. So I’m asking you today as her sister—this marriage… are you sincere, or do you have another motive?”

The hospital room fell silent except for the steady ticking of the monitors. Cameron stood by the window; sunlight filtered through the glass, scattering dappled shadows across him.

He lowered his head, adjusting his cuff as he spoke so softly his words almost melted into the air.

“When we were kids, Jill loved climbing that old pagoda tree. One time, she fell, and I caught her, I broke : rib doing it.” The corners of his mouth curved faintly. “She lay on my chest, sobbing until her tears soaked my shirt. That was when I swore I never wanted to see her cry again.”

“When she was fifteen, she had a terrible fever. I carried her on my back and ran two kilometers to the hospital.” His voice dropped lower. “On the way, she murmured, half-delirious, ‘Cameron, your heartbeat is so loud. That was the first time I realized that in the grip of fear, a heartbeat can sound deafening.”

Sloane regarded him quietly. “Why didn’t you ever tell her?”

“You know Jill.” Cameron slipped his glasses back on, his gaze behind them both tender and tinged with bitterness. “She’s like an apricot that hasn’t ripened; it looks bright on the outside, but inside it’s still green.” His fingers absently traced the rail of the hospital bed. “I was afraid… afraid that by the time she finally understood what love was, the person she looked at would be someone else.”

Then he suddenly lifted his head, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes. “So I was selfish, just this once…” His Adam’s apple bobbed. “The truth is-the idea of this marriage alliance…. I’m the one who pushed for it.”
