Seeing how attentive Lucas was, Tessa beamed so wide she could hardly contain her smile. “Look at that, Lucas actually knows how to take care of someone.” She patted the back of Sloane’s hand. “You just stay here with peace of mind; let him wait on you like this every day.”
Sloane’s cheeks flushed as she drank the soup Lucas fed her. The warmth slid down her throat and spread through her chest, filling her whole body with comfort.
“Slow down,” Lucas murmured, brushing his thumb against her lips to wipe away a trace of broth. “Finish the soup, then get some more rest.”
Tessa watched the scene with deep satisfaction. She gave Molly a subtle look; Molly immediately understood and slipped quietly out, closing the door behind her.
They had just stepped into the hall when the butler came hurrying over.
Tessa frowned. “What is it?”
The butler wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking troubled. “It’s Madam… she found out Mr. Hawthorne returned, and she’s demanding to see him…”
“Hmph!” Tessa’s snort was sharp. She had long since run out of patience with this daughter-in-law who always managed to stir up trouble at the worst possible times.
She struck her cane against the floor with a thud. “Tell her Lucas has more important matters to attend to; he doesn’t have time for her petty nonsense!”
Molly quickly stepped in to steady her. “Madam, please don’t upset yourself; you must take care of your health.”
“Go guard the gates,” Tessa ordered, her eyes narrowing. Though her voice was quiet, there was no mistaking the authority in it. “If anyone dares disturb Lucas and Sloane today, throw them out at once.”
One look at the fierce glint in Tessa’s eyes, and Molly knew-Tessa was determined to protect this marriage.
Inside, Lucas sat by the bed, gazing at Sloane’s sleeping face. Her long lashes cast faint shadows beneath her eyes; her breathing was steady and even. With the utmost care, he pulled the blanket snug around her, his fingertips brushing against the jade bangle on her wrist. The emerald gleam against her snowy skin was breathtaking.
In that moment, a deep sense of fulfillment welled up in Lucas’ chest. He bent down and pressed a featherlight kiss to her forehead, even his breath soft, as if afraid of disturbing her dream.
Only after making sure Sloane was fast asleep did Lucas slip quietly from the room. As the door closed behind him, the gentle warmth on his face vanished, replaced by cold, hard lines.
“Sir.” The butler was already waiting outside, beads of sweat still clinging to his brow. “Madam… she-”
Lucas’ eyes darkened, the air around him turning heavy. “Say it.”
“She said if you don’t see her soon, she’ll make a scene in front of Ms. Rivers…”

“Hmph.” Lucas let out a sharp, derisive sound; his fist clenched tightly at his side. He glanced back at the closed bedroom door, swallowing down his fury, and sneered, “She really does know how to play the part of a ‘good mother.””
