Aubrey suddenly lunged forward, seizing Lucas by the collar. “What did you do to him? Did something happen to him?”

Her long nails raked across his cheek, leaving a deep red mark.

Lucas’ gaze hardened; he clamped down on her wrist with such force that she cried out in pain.

“Enough!” His voice was low and cold as ice. “Don’t forget-Kelvin is still able to live peacefully only because of my mercy.”

“If you keep this up, I’ll tell him the truth.” Lucas let out a sharp, mocking laugh as he released her. “And then, let’s see if he’ll still thank you for being his mother.”

Aubrey’s face drained of color; her lips trembled. “No, don’t tell him…”

Lucas turned and walked to the window, his back to her. “The photos will be delivered tomorrow. But if you dare lay a hand on Sloane again…” He glanced over his shoulder, his eyes dark and threatening. “I’ll send Kelvin abroad immediately, and you’ll never see him again for the rest of your life.”

Madam Aubrey shook all over, her carefully styled hair slipping loose until she looked utterly disheveled. “I won’t-I won’t cause trouble anymore. Please, don’t touch him… don’t touch him…”

“No need.” Lucas waved him off.

He strode into the bathroom and leaned toward the mirror, examining the cut. The man reflected back at him had a brooding, severe look-so different from the tenderness he’d shown at Sloane’s bedside moments earlier.

He splashed his face with cold water, and when he lifted his head again, his composure was restored; he was calm and controlled once more,

But when he opened the bedroom door and saw Sloane’s peaceful, sleeping face, the storm in his eyes finally lifted.

He moved quietly to the bed and carefully took her hand, the one adorned with a jade bracelet, as though holding it could cleanse him of the filth and ugliness of the encounter just now.

That bracelet was the Hawthorne family’s heirloom, passed down only to the family’s rightful daughter- in-law; it was a symbol of the Hawthorne matriarch. By rights, it should have been in Aubrey’s possession, to be handed down to Lucas’ wife. No one knew what had happened in between, but Tessa had reclaimed

it and, today, placed it directly into Sloane’s hands.

Lucas’ fingertips brushed over the intricate vine patterns carved into the jade, his gaze softening.
