“Oh no, careful!” Samantha deliberately tripped herself, stumbling forward uncontrollably toward Sloane.
But Sloane had been ready. With a quick sidestep, she slipped out of the way. Samantha, having thrown herself with too much force, couldn’t stop; she lurched straight toward the staircase.
“Ah!” Samantha screamed in panic, teetering on the edge of falling down the stairs.
At the last second, Sloane hurriedly reached out to grab her. The instant she caught Samantha’s wrist, she used the motion to swing her hand and landed a slap across Samantha’s face.
The sharp sound cracked through the stairwell. Samantha had been pulled back from the fall, but the blow left her stunned, wobbling before collapsing onto the steps.
“Are you all right?” Sloane crouched beside her, her face full of “panic.” “I was so desperate to grab you… I didn’t expect ” She trailed off, gazing at Samantha’s cheek, already swelling bright red.
“You did that on purpose!” Samantha shook with rage.
“How could I?” Sloane blinked innocently. “If I hadn’t caught you, you’d be tumbling down those stairs right now. You really should be thanking me.” Her eyes flicked meaningfully toward the steep staircase.
“What’s going on here?” Marshall appeared at the sound of commotion, taking in the scene before him.
Samantha instantly burst into tears. “Dad! Sloane hit me!”
“Dad.” Sloane rose smoothly, her tone calm. “My sister nearly fell down the stairs. I tried to catch her, but I must have brushed her face by accident.”
Marshall looked between them suspiciously. Samantha’s cheek clearly bore the mark of a slap, yet Sloane’s explanation was entirely plausible.
“You’re lying!” Samantha screamed hysterically. “It was you-”
“Enough!” Marshall cut her off with a bark. “Your sister saved you out of kindness. Stop this nonsense.” He turned to Sloane, his voice softening. “Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.” Sloane gave a demure shake of her head. “Just a little shaken. I’ll get some water to calm down.”
“Go on,” Marshall said kindly, before turning back to glare at Samantha. “And you, behave yourself!”
Sloane was useful to him now; he wouldn’t allow anyone to jeopardize his plans to rise again.
Samantha stared in disbelief as her father walked away, her eyes blazing with hatred so sharp it nearly materialized. She glared at Sloane, grinding out through clenched teeth, “Just you wait…”
Sloane only answered with an innocent smile, then turned gracefully and walked downstairs.
Clutching her burning check, Samantha stormed into Adrian’s study, slamming the door shut behind her.
