“Adrian, you have to stand up for me…” Samantha tilted her face upward, tears brimming in her eyes. “Dad is completely on her side now; I…”
“Don’t be afraid.” Adrian tightened his arms around her, his voice low and edged with suppressed anger. “I have a way to deal with her.”
A flicker of triumph flashed in Samantha’s eyes, though she kept her expression soft and pitiful. “What way?”
Adrian leaned close to her ear and whispered a few words. Samantha’s look of grievance slowly gave way to surprise; then she curved her lips into a sly smile.
“Only you would think of something like this.” Rising on tiptoe, she brushed a kiss against his lips. “I’ll go right now.”
At the garden entrance, Samantha’s fingers lightly traced the small porcelain vial hidden inside her sleeve.
“Sloane,” she said sweetly as Sloane approached, “I had the gardener cultivate a few rare orchids; want to come see them with me?”
That day, Sloane wore a dress that set off her snow-pale skin. Her gaze flicked toward several servants lurking suspiciously in the garden’s depths; the corner of her mouth lifted almost imperceptibly.

“Ah! A swarm of bees!” Samantha cried out in feigned panic, tugging at Sloane as if to flee, though in secret she was pushing her closer to the danger.
Just then, Sloane staggered and caught hold of Samantha’s shawl.
As it slipped from her shoulders, the bare skin at the nape of Samantha’s neck was revealed-bearing the same pheromone mark. She had never realized Sloane had already switched their coats.
“You-“Samantha’s face drained of color; before she could finish, the swarm veered midair and came straight for her.
“Help!” she shrieked, clutching her head as she bolted, only to trip on her own skirts. The venomous bees swarmed her exposed skin, stinging wildly; in moments, her face ballooned with angry welts.
Sloane stood at a safe distance, her voice carrying a note of urgent worry. “Hurry! Someone help! My sister’s being attacked by bees!”
Servants rushed in, flustered, but none dared approach the frenzied swarm. Only after Samantha
