“Enough!” Marshall’s furious voice cut through the night. His gaze flicked over Samantha with something unreadable before settling on Adrian. “Take your sister back to her room. From this moment on, no one is allowed to mention this again.”

“Honey…” Helen tried to speak.

“I said that’s the end of it!” Marshall barked, almost roaring, then swept out with a furious flick of his sleeve.

With Marshall’s order given, Adrian wrapped an arm around Samantha and led her away.

Helen collapsed onto a stone bench, her vision blurred with tears. “Such sin… this is retribution…”

She suddenly looked up and locked eyes with Sloane’s icy stare. Her whole body trembled. “It was you, you planned this…”

Sloane stepped forward slowly, bent down, and whispered into her ear, “When you stole me away and switched me with Samantha all those years ago, did it ever cross your mind that this day would come?” Her voice was soft, yet it plunged Helen into an abyss of cold.

Helen shook uncontrollably, tears spilling like broken pearls. She clutched Sloane’s wrist with a death grip, her nails nearly piercing the skin.

“I didn’t have a choice…” Helen’s voice came out raw, ragged with despair. “He threatened Adrian’s life- Boone’s, Conrad’s too. If I didn’t take you, they all would’ve been killed…”

Sloane yanked her hand free, her gaze sharp as ice. “So to protect your own children, you sacrificed my entire family?”

“No… it wasn’t like that…” Helen wept so hard she shook all over, reaching again for Sloane’s hand. “I truly had no way out then…”

Sloane stepped back, avoiding her touch; her eyes were glacial, tempered with fury. “No way out? And so you felt justified watching my family torn apart for over twenty years?” She leaned down, her voice low and lethal. “Watching me beaten, watching me nearly freeze to death in the snow-why didn’t you feel cornered then?”

Helen had no answer; she could only shake her head over and over.

“Save your tears.” Sloane straightened, towering over her. “Do you think a few words of remorse can erase two decades of sin?” She turned and walked away, her voice scattering into the night wind. “Don’t even dream of it.”

This was only the beginning.

News came from Conor’s side just as Marshall was pacing restlessly in his study. His phone suddenly lost all signal; every channel to his overseas partners was severed.

“What’s going on?” He hurled the phone to the floor in rage, cold sweat breaking across his brow. At that moment, the butler burst in, panic-stricken. “Sir, terrible news! All of our partners have been taken into police custody!”
