Just as the soldiers secured control of the Rivers residence, Samantha suddenly appeared on the second- floor landing. In one hand, she clutched a vial glowing with an ceric blue light; in the other, she had her fingers clamped tightly around Helen’s throat.
“Don’t move!” she shrieked. “This vial contains a modified virus; if I smash it, no one within six miles will
survive!”
“Sammy, what are you doing?” Adrian’s face went pale the moment he saw her holding Helen hostage. He stumbled forward two steps, his voice shaking. “Sammy! Are you insane? That’s our mother!”
Samantha’s grip didn’t falter; the vial gleamed coldly in the moonlight. “Adrian, I had no choice; if you want to blame someone, blame Sloane. She’s the reason for all of this.”
Sloane’s gaze was icy. “And what exactly did I do to you? You used Dr. Bonnie’s identity to poison those seventeen patients-you nearly turned Stonebridge into a wasteland. Every single thing you did, you did yourself.”
Adrian stared at Samantha in shock, as if seeing a stranger. “You’re… Dr. Bonnie?”
Samantha no longer bothered to hide it. “That’s right. I am Dr. Bonnie.”
Adrian looked at the sister he had cherished since childhood and felt only alienation. His lips trembled. “Then, the things you told me…”
“All lies.” Samantha let out a manic laugh, the vial shaking dangerously with her movements. “Adrian, did you really think I’d ever fall for someone as useless as you?”
Her words struck him like lightning. He staggered back two steps. “You… what did you just say?”
“If I hadn’t needed you to help me get revenge on Sloane, do you think I’d have demeaned myself, playing along with you?” She curled her lip in disgust. “Every time you touched me, I wanted to throw up.”
At that, Helen began to tremble violently; murky tears streamed down her cheeks. “Such sin… this is my retribution…”
“Shut up!” Samantha barked, tightening her grip on Helen’s neck. “If it weren’t for you bringing Sloane back and stealing everything from me, I wouldn’t have ended up like this. This is all your fault!”
Sloane’s eyes hardened as she edged a half-step forward. “Samantha, do you really think you can get away?”
“Stay back!” Samantha retreated warily. “Take one more step and I’ll smash this vial!” Her twisted smile fixed on Sloane. “If I can’t escape, then we all die together.”
Adrian’s face turned ashen. His knees buckled, and he collapsed to the ground. Trembling, he raised a hand toward her. “So… those patients… it really was you…”
“That’s right!” Samantha lifted her chin triumphantly. “If it weren’t for that meddling slut Sloane, my plan would’ve already succeeded!” A sinister smile spread across her face. “But that’s fine; this is even more
fun…”
