The doctor gave a firm nod. “Mr. Hawthorne, Dr. Rivers is truly fine. If there’s anything of concern, it’s that her body is extremely weak; she’ll need careful recovery afterward.”
At that, he seemed to recall something, paused briefly, then added, “But once Dr. Rivers wakes, she’ll be capable of managing that herself.”
Lucas sat at her bedside, watching as the pallor faded from her face and color slowly returned. Her lashes fluttered gently before her eyes finally opened.
“You’re awake at last?” Lucas’ voice was impossibly tender; his fingers brushed lightly against her cheek.
Sloane blinked, the corners of her mouth lifting faintly. “Lucas…”
Countless emotions flickered through his gaze, until they condensed into a single quiet sigh. He lowered his head, resting his forehead against hers. “You scared me half to death…”
She felt the tremor in his hands, and her heart softened. “I’m sorry…”
Lucas said nothing. He rose to his feet. “I’ll get the doctor.”
Sloane frowned as she watched his retreating back.
Several military doctors soon came in, surrounding her as they carried out a thorough examination.
Her eyes, however, never left Lucas. She followed his figure past the bustling medics; he stood by the porthole, sunlight cutting through the glass, painting fractured shadows across the sharp lines of his profile. His peach-blossom eyes-always smiling in calmer days-were lowered now; his thick lashes cast a somber shade beneath them.
“Ms. Rivers is recovering well,” the lead medic announced, setting aside his stethoscope. “She’s only weak; she’ll need plenty of rest.”
Only then did Lucas lift his head. He nodded politely. “Thank you for your efforts.”
When the medical staff departed, silence settled over the cabin. Lucas remained where he was, making no move toward her. Sloane’s heart sank.
“Lucas…” she called softly,
He finally walked back to her bedside and sat down, though he still said nothing.
“You’re mad at me?” Sloane tested, brushing her fingers against his.
