She leaned against Lucas’ chest, tilting her face up to him as she spoke softly. “Ever since I was little, my adoptive parents either beat me or cursed at me; later, when I returned to the Rivers family, they all still favored Samantha.”
*I… I just wanted a family who would love me,” Sloane’s voice was barely audible, her fingers clutching tightly at Lucas’ collar, “a family who would only love me, and me alone…”
Lucas’ heart clenched hard. He looked down at the frail girl in his arms and remembered the sadness that always clouded her eyes whenever she mentioned family. Her battered past had left her believing she had o gamble her life just to prove she was worthy of being loved.
He pulled her closer, his chin brushing gently against the crown of her head. “Once you’ve recovered, I’ll go with you to find them.”
‘Lucas, I need you to help me investigate two people-Tony and Beth.”
At her words, Lucas immediately pulled out his phone and dialed Andrew. “Look into these two; I need it as fast as possible.”
In less than half an hour, Andrew’s reply came. Lucas scanned the screen, his brow slowly relaxing. “They were well-known entrepreneurs in the country twenty years ago; after an incident, they immigrated abroad. They’re now settled in Sundara.”
*Sundara?” Sloane instantly tried to get out of bed. “I have to find them right away!”
“No.” Lucas pressed her shoulder firmly. “Your condition isn’t suitable for long-distance travel.”
“But-”
“No buts.” Lucas’ tone was absolute. “At the very least, you wait until the doctors confirm you’re fully recovered.”
They were still locked in their standoff when the cabin door suddenly opened. A woman in a simple robe stepped inside. Her black hair was coiled into a plain bun; her face, however, looked strikingly youthful.
“Master?” Sloane’s eyes widened.
“You little thing, making trouble again?” The woman cast her a calm glance.
Sloane immediately went quiet. “Master, I wasn’t making trouble.”
Lucas stood quickly, bowing his head with respect. “Please, master, have a seat.”
Her gaze lingered on Lucas for a long moment before she sat down with quiet composure.
“You’re not even healed, and yet you’re set on running all over the place-if that’s not making trouble, what is?” she said as she reached for Sloane’s wrist to take her pulse.
Words tumbled quickly from Sloane’s lips as she recounted everything that had happened in the past days. “Master, that woman said she killed my mother. I have to go to Sundara…”
