Sloane didn’t know how to answer him. After all, everything she knew about her connection to Beth came only from Jessica’s word–and even that might not be the full truth.

Lucas subtly stepped in front of her, shielding her from Shawn’s questioning gaze. “Shawn, how are you feeling?” he asked evenly, smoothly changing the subject. “Do you remember how you were poisoned?”

“Poisoned?” Only then did Shawn notice just how weak his body felt.

He pressed a hand to his temple, trying to recall. “That day, I met a few friends at a café. They were running late, and just as I was about to leave, a few strangers barged in. After that… I don’t remember anything.”

“You were hit with a rare neurotoxin,” Jaime said, gesturing toward Sloane. “Dr. Rivers— worked like hell to drag you back from the brink of death.”

Shawn turned to the young woman who looked so much like his aunt. His tone was sincere. “Thank you, Dr. Rivers. Thank you all for saving my life.”

“You might be thanking us too soon,” Lucas cut in suddenly.

“What do you mean?” Shawn looked at him, puzzled.

Lucas’s voice was calm but serious. “The police are searching the entire city for us. The charge? Kidnapping Mr. Shawn from the Oliver family.”

Shawn shot upright, his face flushing with anger beneath its pallor. “What? That’s ridiculous!”

Jaime pulled out his phone and handed it over. “See for yourself. The warrant’s already out.”

Shawn stared at the wanted notice on the screen. “What the heck is going on?”

Lucas told him everything–how Charlie had framed them, how the setup unfolded. “That’s the situation,” he finished.

But Shawn frowned, “Wait a second. If that’s his plan, it falls apart the moment I call home. Why would he pull something that easy to expose?”

“Which only proves,” Lucas said steadily, “that he’s working with whoever poisoned you. That toxin would’ve killed you if Sloane hadn’t been there at the right time.”

Sloane hesitated. “I don’t know if it really counts. It’s only a theory…”

“It’s fine,” Shawn said gently. “Go ahead. Whatever it is, I’ll verify it myself.”
