Meanwhile, Ruben was shouting into the phone, his voice raw with fury. “That scumbag Charlie! I want him beaten to death!”

The gunfight dragged on for nearly an hour before the distant wail of sirens broke through the chaos. Both sides scrambled to retreat. In the confusion, Charlie and Ruben unexpectedly crossed paths–and drew their guns at the same time.

Two gunshots cracked through the air almost simultaneously. Charlie was hit in the shoulder; Ruben took a bullet to the abdomen and was quickly hauled away by his men.

“Well,” Lucas muttered as he switched off the surveillance feed, “that feud of theirs just turned permanent.” He turned toward the others. “While they’re busy tearing each other apart, we should reach out to the Oliver family.”

Jaime immediately frowned. “Charlie’s already spread word that we kidnapped Shawn. We’re wanted all over the city. The Oliver family’s also got every man they have looking for us.” His face tightened. “If we show up now, they’ll probably gun us down before we can explain.”

“How about I go?” Sloane offered, glancing at Lucas.

Lucas understood what she meant. Sloane looked exactly like Beth; the Oliver family wouldn’t dare shoot her on sight. Still, he shook his head. “No. We don’t know what the Oliver family knows, and I’m not sending you in alone.”

Jaime looked between the two of them, completely lost. Whatever silent exchange they were having, he clearly wasn’t part of it–and he didn’t like that one bit. “Hey, I’m part of this too,” he snapped. “If you’ve got a plan, at least clue me in.’

Lucas shot him a quick look. “You’ll be the one to contact the Oliver family.”

“Me?” Jaime shot to his feet. “I’ll be dead before I even see them!”

Lucas’s lips curved into a knowing smile. “If I remember right, three years ago you saved the Oliver family’s sixth daughter in Ironvale, didn’t you?”

Jaime froze. “That was nothing–just a small favor. I barely even remember it…”

Sloane tilted her head, curious. “You know the Oliver family’s sixth daughter?”

“Know‘ might be putting it lightly,” Lucas said with exaggerated seriousness. “He played the hero and saved her life.”

Jaime’s face turned scarlet under Sloane’s amused gaze. “It–it was just a coincidence! A few thugs, that’s all!”

Sloane hadn’t thought much of it before, but seeing Jaime blush made her eyes sparkle with mischief. “This sixth daughter of the Olivers… is she really that pretty?”

Lucas pressed his lips together, fighting a smirk. “Let’s just say she’s very much his type.”
