Helen exploded the moment Marshall asked. “Everything was going fine last night –until Lucas’s people blocked the reporters. We couldn’t even get inside.“.

“I was planning to stir things up and force Lucas to show himself, but that damn Andrew knocked me out,” she said, her voice shaking with fury. “They dumped me in the hotel lobby for the night like trash.”

Quinn glanced upstairs. “Ms. Rivers came back a little after ten last night.”

Helen’s face went dark. “Go drag that brat down here!”

She’d spent the night in the lobby, humiliated—and woke up with a crick in her neck. She wasn’t about to let Sloane off without settling the score.

“Forget all that. Did it work or not?” Marshall snapped. He didn’t care for her complaints—he was focused on saving the company.

“How would I know?” she grumbled. “I got knocked out. But that girl did go into Lucas’s room.’

Marshall’s eyes lit up. A man and a woman, alone in a room, with her drugged? There was no way Lucas had just sat on his hands.

As long as something happened between them, Lucas would have no choice but to get involved.

Quinn led a group of servants upstairs to bang on Sloane’s door–only to find her opening it herself.

She shot them a cold glare. The male servants froze, not daring to move.

Sloane brushed past them and headed downstairs. She walked into the living room and faced Marshall and Helen directly, her gaze as cold as ice. “It’s way too early to be screaming like lunatics. If you’ve got something to say, say it.”

“You little-” Helen was about to explode, but Marshall stopped her. He looked Sloane up and down and asked, “Tell me, were you with Lucas last night? Don’t worry–your father’s not some old–fashioned man. I won’t blame you.”

Sloane felt utterly disgusted. Just hearing him speak made her skin crawl. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She glanced at Helen. “I went to the restroom. When I came back, you were gone. So I left on my own.”

“Bullshit!” Helen completely lost it. Any shred of composure flew out the window. “I personally walked you into Lucas’s room! You stayed in there forever—don’t even try to tell me nothing happened!”

Sloane had never felt more repulsed. “So what now? Should I put it in the paper? Let the whole world see how filthy the Rivers family really is?”

“Sloane!” Marshall pointed at her. “Don’t forget, you’re part of the Rivers family too. If we go down, you’re going down with us.”

He was convinced something had happened between her and Lucas. He was desperate to use it as leverage. “Without the Rivers family behind you, there’s no way Lucas would marry you. Just listen to your father. I would never steer you wrong.”

Sloane was shaking with anger. She didn’t want anything to do with the Hawthorne family—and even less to do with the Rivers family dragging Lucas into their mess.

“You think Lucas is that easy to manipulate?” She sneered at them. “You really don’t know what happens to people who try to scheme against him?”
