Conrad burst in, visibly panicked. “Boones been formally detained by the police.”

“What?” Helen shot up from the couch. “Wasn’t he just cooperating with the investigation? How did it turn into detainment?”

Marshall reacted instantly. “Did the police find new evidence?”

Conrad’s face was grim. “The guy who took the fall for Boone just recanted his confession in prison.”

“What?!” Marshall and Helen cried out in unison, their faces draining of all color.

Helen collapsed back onto the couch, her eyes vacant as she kept muttering, “It’s over… It’s all over…”

“Where’s your brother?” Marshall’s voice cracked with panic. “Didn’t he go talk to that guy’s family? Why would they suddenly change their story?”

“He went to the station to see Boone. He told me to come back and warn you all to prepare.” Conrad didn’t really understand what his brother meant by that–he was just repeating the message..

But Marshall understood. He clenched his fists tightly and stayed silent for a long time.

Sloane understood too–and she hadn’t expected her eldest brother to have the guts to make such a ruthless move. Sacrificing the pawn to save the king.
