Marshall felt a twinge of panic under Chandler’s sharp gaze. He instinctively wiped the sweat from his brow and avoided eye contact as he muttered, “Mr. Chandler, this… this is all a misunderstanding. Sloane and the family had a little
disagreement, and I got upset and said something about grounding her, but I didn’t really mean it.”
He turned to Sloane and forced a chuckle. “Sloane, my dear, I was just talking out of anger. You took it way too seriously.”
Helen looked like she wanted to say something, but Marshall grabbed her arm and pinched her hard, silently warning her to keep quiet.
Helen winced in pain and reluctantly swallowed her words.
“Oh, so it was just empty talk, huh?” Sloane acted as if she hadn’t noticed a thing, her tone breezy. “Then I guess I’m free to go now, right?”
She turned to Samantha with a faint smile. “Do you want to come back to school with me?”
Samantha bit her lip until she tasted blood. “No need,” she spat, every word seething with resentment.
“Enough with the chit–chat. Let’s go, let’s go!” Mr. Samson was clearly impatient. He grabbed Sloane’s arm and all but dragged her toward the door, eager to get her back to school before anything else could go wrong.
Chandler didn’t follow right away. Instead, he turned back to Marshall and said casually, “Mr. Marshall, Miss Sloane is an extraordinary talent–someone we only see once in a century, Stonebridge University is fully committed to nurturing her. Of course, if the Rivers family can show her more care and support, it’ll help her go even further. That would benefit both the family and our university.”
His tone was even, but Marshall heard the unspoken warning loud and clear. Chandler was telling him not to mistreat Sloane again–or the Rivers family could forget about gaining anything from her.
Marshall forced a stiff smile. “Of course, Mr. Chandler. We’ll be sure to support Sloane’s studies however we can.”

Chandler gave a slight nod and said nothing more. He turned and left to catch up with Mr. Samson and Sloane.
“Darling, this can’t be right,” Helen muttered after they’d gone. “Sloane’s just some country bumpkin. How could she possibly score 745? That’s the highest score Stonebridge has ever had. Do you think… Lucas might’ve had something to do with this?”
Marshall, who knew Sloane’s background better than anyone, found the idea oddly plausible. She’d dropped out in middle school and spent five years locked up in a psychiatric facility. There was no way she could’ve made it to college–let alone ace the entrance exam.
“That would explain everything,” he murmured.
Helen’s face lit up. Her mind was already racing with a hundred ways to ruin Sloane’s reputation.
