A professor burst into the room, dressed in a button–up shirt and gripping a roll of blueprints in one hand. His eyes darted anxiously around the office until they landed on Sloane–and the moment he saw her, they lit up with excitement.
“This must be Miss Sloane!” He strode up to her in just a few steps, his face filled with urgency and anticipation.
Chandler and Mr. Samson were both momentarily stunned. When Chandler recognized who it was, he frowned. “Mr. Jordan, what are you doing, barging in like that?”
But Mr. Jordan had no time for Chandler’s mildly reproachful tone. He cut straight to the point. “Mr. Chandler, Miss Sloane scored full marks in both math and physics. A student like her clearly belongs in our Physics Department.”
Mr. Samson immediately tensed. He stepped in between them and blocked Mr. Jordan. “Mr. Jordan, that’s completely unfair. I personally brought Miss Sloane back from the Rivers household. She should obviously join our Computer Science Department. I’ve already made plans to cultivate her into a leading figure in the field.”
Mr. Jordan was unmoved. “Mr. Samson, let’s not twist facts. Sloane’s answer sheet clearly demonstrated her logical reasoning and deep understanding of physical concepts. Her gift for physics is undeniable. Sending her to your department would be a complete waste.”
The two began arguing on the spot, each insisting Sloane should be with their department.
“She must join Physics!”
“She belongs in Computer Science!”
Sloane stood there a little helplessly, watching the two professors go at it. She never imagined her arrival would cause such an all–out turf war.
Chandler cleared his throat to interrupt. “Gentlemen, calm down. I think we can all agree that Sloane’s excellence speaks for itself. But we should also respect the student’s own wishes.”

He turned to Sloane with a warm smile. “Sloane, which program are you more interested in?”
Sloane looked from Mr. Samson to Mr. Jordan. Both men were smiling at her with eager expressions, each hoping to sway her to their side.
“I-“Just as she was about to respond, the office door burst open again with a loud bang.
“Wait!” Mr. Lyan appeared in the doorway, panting heavily. He’d clearly pushed his aging body to the limit to get there in time.
Mr. Samson and Mr. Jordan both stiffened in alarm. They stepped forward in unison to block him. “Mr. Lyan, what are you doing here?”
Still catching his breath, Mr. Lyan raised the roll of blueprints and declared, “Move aside! I came here today to claim this student! Sloane’s talent in architectural design is once in a century. Her entrance exam answer showed an incredible grasp of spatial structure, seamlessly blending aesthetics and function. Our Architecture Department needs her!”
