“Ms. Sloane, please,” the general manager said as he pushed open the door to the private

room.

As soon as the door opened, Sloane spotted Lucas seated at the head of the table. His expression was cool, his presence commanding. Beside him, Samson and Benjamin were deep in animated conversation.

Hearing the door, all three turned their heads. Samson was the first to rise, flashing his signature broad grin. “Sloane, Jill, and that Clark kid—come on in!”

Lucas didn’t get up, but the icy sharpness in his features softened ever so slightly. A hint of warmth flickered through his dark eyes. He turned to the manager and said, “Serve the food.”

“Yes, Mr. Hawthorne.” The manager bowed and exited swiftly.

“Uncle Samson.” Jill plopped down next to Samson, suddenly much better behaved now that he was around.

Cameron slid in beside her.

Sloane glanced around before walking over to the seat beside Lucas and taking it.

Jill snuck a quick glance at Lucas before lowering her head. Although her Uncle Samson and Lucas were close friends, she’d barely met this elusive Mr. Hawthorne before–let alone dined

with him.

“Sloane,” Samson said dramatically, sighing with exaggerated grievance, “you haven’t been online lately. I’ve had no one to game with.”

Sloane took a sip of water, then shot him a glance. “I’m in school.”

“That’s no excuse. After dinner, no matter what, we’re playing a round,” Samson insisted.

Jill tilted her head curiously. “Uncle Samson, what game do you play?”

“League of Legends,” Samson replied.

Jill’s eyes lit up. “I wanna play too!”

Samson immediately looked at her with mock disgust. “You? Please. Last time I carried you, I nearly lost MVP. I spent the whole match saving your sorry butt. It was exhausting. And our ranks are too far apart–we can’t even queue together.”

Jill puffed out her cheeks in frustration, though she knew he wasn’t wrong.

Sloane gave her a sidelong glance and offered, “It’s fine. I’ll boost your rank.”

Jill’s eyes sparkled again. “Sloane, you’re the best.”

As the group chatted, the dishes were served one after another.

Lucas, with his long, elegant fingers, raised his wine glass and gently tapped it against Sloane’s teacup. His voice was warm. “Congratulations.”

Sloane raised an eyebrow and waited for him to continue.

Lucas gave her a faint, magnetic smile. “Congratulations on ranking first in the special admissions exam.”

She stared at that smile of his. Jill once said she had a pretty smile–but Lucas? Lucas smiled like a siren tempting souls.

“Thanks,” Sloane replied calmly, blinking slowly. “You had a hand in it too.”
