“I prefer a quiet environment. The dorm is too crowded,” Sloane said plainly. Then she added, “I’m double–majoring in three fields. I need a lot of time. They interrupt my thinking.”

Mr. Samson’s mouth twitched. It was the first time someone had answered that question so directly.

Sloane blinked at him. “If you agree to let me live off campus, I’ll agree to participate in the Blackhawk selection.”

Mr. Samson paused in surprise–then let out a chuckle. “You little rascal. Bargaining with me now, are you?”

He shook his head, pretending to be helpless, but eventually pulled an application form from the drawer. “Fill this out first. And if you’re going to try out for Blackhawk, you’d better prepare properly.”

Sloane eagerly took the form, grabbed a pen from the nearby desk, and quickly began filling it in. Name, major, reason for applying–each word written with focus and care.

“I promise, Professor, I’ll prepare well. I won’t embarrass you.”

Mr. Samson, watching her enthusiasm, reminded her seriously, “The selection isn’t easy. The written part covers cybersecurity, cryptography–all the foundational knowledge. The hands- on portion simulates real–life attack scenarios. It’s meant to test your reaction under pressure.”

Sloane handed back the form. “Understood. I’ll start drafting a detailed study plan right away.”

Mr. Samson took it with a nod. “Good. You can go now.”

Sloane turned to leave, then paused mid–step. She turned back. “Professor, there’s one more thing. I’d like to request exemption from my freshman core courses. I’ve already studied all of it before. Sitting through them again isn’t helpful. I’d rather spend that time advancing in my other subjects.”

Mr. Samson’s smile faded. His brow furrowed slightly, and his tone sharpened. “Sloane, you can’t rush learning. Freshman–level courses might look basic, but they lay the foundation for everything else. Don’t let confidence turn into arrogance.”

Sloane quickly raised her hands. “I’m not being arrogant, Professor. I’ve truly mastered the material. If you don’t believe me, test me.”
