Sloane gently laid her fingers on his wrist, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse beneath her touch.
After a few seconds, she spoke softly, “You’ve been staying up late a lot, haven’t you? It’s wearing you down. You need to rest. No dry needling today–take two days off. Come see me the day after tomorrow, and I’ll detox your system with a new treatment.”
Lucas watched her quietly, lips curling into a faint smile. His voice was soft, but sincere. “Alright.”
“What are you guys doing?” Jill suddenly popped up beside them, eyes wide with curiosity as she stared at Sloane’s hand on Lucas’s wrist.
“Nothing.” Sloane said naturally, withdrawing her hand as she changed the subject. “So? Who won?”
Jill and Cameron had been having their own bowling match earlier.
“Me, of course!” Jill’s attention immediately shifted. She began animatedly recounting their game, hands flying as she spoke. “You should’ve seen it–Cameron was so confident at first, but then I brought the heat and crushed him!” She tilted her chin up proudly.
Samson walked over, chuckling. “Come on, don’t brag too much. Cameron was probably going easy on you.”
Jill put her hands on her hips. “No way! I won fair and square. He just couldn’t keep up!”
She spun around and glared at Cameron. “Say it. Say it yourself.”
Cameron smiled and nodded. “It’s true. I lost because I’m not as good as you.”
Only then did Jill beam with satisfaction. She turned back and grinned at Samson. “Hear that, Uncle Samson?”
Laughter and chatter carried on between the group, and later that afternoon, Sloane and Jill headed back to campus.
Sloane didn’t have class that afternoon, so once she returned, she went straight to see Mr. Samson. She had decided to move off campus, but Stonebridge University had strict rules about off–campus housing–she needed her advisor’s signature to make it official.

Mr. Samson was seated at his desk grading papers. When he looked up and saw her, his face lit up with a warm smile. “Sloane, perfect timing. Have a seat–I was just about to reach out to you.”
Sloane pulled out a chair and sat down. “You needed to see me, Mr. Samson?”
He got straight to the point. “Sloane, are you interested in trying out for Blackhawk?”
