She was so sure she’d win a spot in the competition that she started celebrating early—and of course, the whole point was to show off in front of Lindsay.

“Hey, everyone in the Design Department! I’ve been here for a while now, and you’ve all helped me out a lot. Tonight, dinner’s on me, and after that, let’s go out for karaoke!”

Who would say no to a free night of food, drinks, and fun? Hands shot up around the room.

“Thanks, Naomi! That’s really generous of you.”

People are selfish by nature. After the whole “rose” incident, Naomi might have looked like a fool, but that had already blown over, and none of them were personally involved. Now there was free food and entertainment up for grabs—suddenly, they were all “best friends” again.

“Lindsay, make sure you come too!” Naomi put on her best gracious smile as she extended the invitation. She thought she knew Lindsay well enough—not just her strengths, but her weaknesses too.

She was certain Lindsay wouldn’t show up.

But to Naomi’s surprise, Lindsay didn’t play by the usual rules. She flashed Naomi a sweet, almost mischievous smile. “Sure, I’ll be there.”

Naomi’s face froze for a split second. She’d already extended the invitation, and to take it back now would just make her look petty.

She forced a smile and let out a stiff laugh. “Great, looking forward to it.”

Lindsay ducked her head, trying to hide her grin. Oh, Naomi, you’re not getting rid of me that easily.

Naomi felt a surge of annoyance and quickly texted Joseph:

[Was just going to take a couple of colleagues out for dinner tonight, but then Lindsay insisted on coming too. Now it’s turned into me treating the whole Design Department. That’s over twenty people! Do you know how much that’ll cost? And after dinner, they all want to hit up a karaoke bar.]

Joseph replied almost instantly and, before anything else, transferred her $7,500.

[Lindsay’s really got some nerve. She’s doing this on purpose—just wants to make you spend money. How much do you make in a month? Take the whole Design Department out for dinner and karaoke, and there goes several months’ salary.]

Naomi:

[Sigh! What can I do? It’s my own fault for offering. If I invited just one or two people and left everyone else out, that’d look bad too.
