Lindsay and Cheryl got out of the car together, while Wendy stayed in the backseat, ready to watch the show unfold.
The moment Joseph’s car was forced to a stop, he jumped out, tense and suspicious. Naomi, however, remained frozen in the front passenger seat.
Joseph barely had time to process what was happening when two figures—completely unrecognizable in heavy coats and balaclavas, only their eyes showing—strode toward him.
A jolt of dread shot up Joseph’s spine. He instinctively turned, trying to scramble back into the car, but Lindsay grabbed his shoulder and swung a fist straight into his gut.
He doubled over, howling in pain, but that was only the beginning. Lindsay and Cheryl set upon him together, fists and knees flying. Normally, just one of them would have been more than a match for him; with both, he didn’t stand a chance.
Watching the chaos, Naomi’s heart pounded in terror. She slammed her hand down on the door lock, desperate to keep the attackers from turning on her once they’d finished with Joseph.
Lindsay, fueled by old grudges, went at Joseph with extra relish—each punch landing with the weight of past grievances. Her final blow was a savage kick straight between his legs.
Joseph’s scream rang out across the parking lot. He collapsed to his knees, clutching himself, sweat pouring down his face.
But Lindsay and Cheryl weren’t finished. They kept hammering away, targeting his weakest spots. Still, they remembered Wendy’s warning: don’t kill him—just leave him half-crippled.
At last, when they’d vented their anger, they stepped back. From the backseat, Wendy had watched everything through the rearview mirror, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes. She finally felt like she could breathe again.
And yet, a pang of regret hit her.
Why hadn’t she joined in from the start? Why had she just sat and watched, when she could have taken her own revenge?
Meanwhile, Naomi cowered in the front seat, trembling violently, trying to make herself as small and invisible as possible. She was terrified she’d be next.
