Althea’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at Lindsay.
Her mind raced back to Lindsay’s earlier question—aside from the sperm bank debacle, had she ever done anything else to hurt Yves? And then there was that strange exchange with Helen just moments ago.
Could it be that Helen had spilled everything—every nasty thing she’d ever done to Yves—to Lindsay? What other reason could there be for Lindsay to throw her out while letting Helen stay?
“You! You’re the one smearing my name, aren’t you?” Althea jabbed a finger at Helen, her voice shrill with accusation. “I knew you were trouble, but I never thought you’d be this vicious—dumping all the blame on me just so you can keep enjoying your cushy life!”
Helen rolled her eyes. “Are you crazy? Your mess has nothing to do with me, so don’t you dare pin it on me.” God, she’d been waiting for this moment—hearing that Althea was finally being kicked out of the Quigley family had made her day.
With her least favorite person gone, maybe that coveted position of lady of the house would finally be within reach. And with that, she’d never have to worry about money again.
“Mr. Quigley, all these years I’ve given my heart and soul to this family!” Althea wailed, her voice cracking as she shot daggers at Helen, convinced she’d been betrayed. “Now you’re throwing me out over a few minor mistakes? That’s not fair!”
She had always coveted Helen’s place as mistress of the house, and now she was paying the price.
Helen didn’t flinch. She lifted her chin and met Althea’s glare head-on, one eyebrow arched in open defiance.
“All I see is greed, plain and simple,” Mr. Quigley said with a cold, cutting sarcasm. “Do you really want me to spell out the rest?”
The fact that he wasn’t having her formally disowned was already more mercy than Althea deserved.
“Mr. Quigley, I—” Althea tried to defend herself, but he cut her off.
