“You knew perfectly well how sharp and calculating Bertha could be. She was only able to become the lady of the Quigley household because you put in a good word for her with old Mr. Quigley. You didn’t just win her over—you drove a wedge between her and Helen. Now that Althea has been taken down, Bertha and Helen are locked in a silent war, while you sit back and watch the show unfold.”
“Who are you, really?” Lindsay’s expression tightened, a hint of a reckless suspicion flickering in her eyes.
“Who I am isn’t important. What matters is that you understand—I mean you no harm.”
“Do you honestly think I’d believe anything you say?” Lindsay scoffed. From the moment she joined the domestic network, she’d been walking straight into the trap Horace had so carefully set for her. How could she possibly trust someone this manipulative?
“Believe me or not—it doesn’t matter. But let me warn you, Quigley Sr. is not nearly as decent as you think. He’s the worst one in the entire Quigley family.” There was a flash of hatred in Horace’s eyes, his voice cold as ice.
“Oh, please. You really think I’ll fall for such a feeble attempt to turn me against him? You’re insulting my intelligence.” Lindsay laughed at his naïveté.
“Suit yourself. I’ve said what I needed to say. I’m leaving.” Horace stood, locking eyes with Lindsay. “We’ll meet again—but next time, we might not be allies.”
“Wait, I have one more question.”
“Go ahead. If I can answer it, I will.”
“If you hate the Quigley family and have it out for Yves, why did you warn me about the incense?” Lindsay just couldn’t make sense of it.
Horace raised an eyebrow. “Is that so hard to understand? If Yves died, the game would be over far too soon. And with your abilities, you would’ve discovered the incense was tampered with eventually. All I did was drop a hint. It gave you a good impression of me, didn’t it? Why wouldn’t I take that opportunity?”
“You really are a piece of work. Every move is a calculated step.” Lindsay finally realized just how foolish she’d been. A phrase suddenly popped into her mind: if someone seems perfectly suited to you, understands all your needs, and there’s never a reason to doubt them—it’s probably because they were tailor-made to scam you.
