“Wow, Naomi, you’re so lucky! Your boyfriend’s not only gorgeous—he’s a hopeless romantic too. I am so jealous!”
“Oh my gosh, look at all these roses! Can I have a few?” Another colleague hooked her arm around Naomi’s, her voice syrupy sweet.
Everyone here could tell these were top-of-the-line roses. Just one of them probably cost as much as a day’s wages.
If someone managed to snag a few, they could flip them to a florist for a tidy profit.
Once the first person spoke up, the rest chimed in.
Naomi soaked up the attention, practically floating as her coworkers swarmed around her. She lifted her chin, basking in the praise, ego swelling to the point of bursting.
Lindsay shook her head, a cold little smile on her lips. The more smug Naomi looked now, the harder the fall would be.
“Lindsay, do you want some? I’ll save you a few,” Naomi suddenly called out, her tone taunting.
Lindsay just smiled, choosing not to respond.
The others, eager to get their hands on a few roses, kept piling on the flattery.
“Naomi, don’t bother sharing with her. She’d sleep with anyone for a shot at money and status. Just talking to her makes me feel dirty.”
“Yeah, seriously. She’s got two hands and two feet, but she still has to find some rich guy to cling to.”
Lindsay raised an eyebrow. So this was how Naomi talked about her behind her back? Gold-digger? Wasn’t that a better description for Naomi herself?
Naomi smirked, tossing Lindsay a look of pure arrogance, as if to say, “You really think you can compete with me?”
“I’ll sign for them,” Naomi said, turning to the delivery guy behind her. “Thanks for bringing these out in this heat. Let me buy you a coffee.”
The courier gave a polite thank you, but then checked the name on the order and hesitated, his expression shifting. “Actually, sorry, but these are for Lindsay. Not Naomi.”
The words hung in the air. Naomi froze, her posture stiffening, color draining from her face. The pen slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor.
They weren’t for her?
