There was only one topic of discussion among them–tomorrow’s inner camp selection.

Once they were gone, Lara turned to Theresa. “Theresa, perhaps we should do as he says and leave. Mr. Hershberge’s way too set in his ways. Nothing can change his mind once his mind is made up. Trust me. The locals here are well acquainted with his brand of temper.”

“Yeah, you’re not the first outsider to find this place. Back then, there was a group of thieves who wanted to raid the inner camp. They even convinced some of the locals to steal supplies.

“Mr. Hershberge warned them to stay in line when he found out. He gave them three chances. When they did it a fourth time, he made good on his threat and killed the rabblerousers.”

Lachlan paused momentarily before adding, “He’s usually a pretty great guy. He isn’t a ruthless murderer, but the inner camp’s safety is his minefield.”

Theresa asked, “Why is he so protective of the inner camp? Did you guys strike a deal with them or something?”

Lara and Lachlan nodded.

“Yeah. The inner camp allows us to live here as long as we don’t break the rules. Well, there really is only one rule–we can’t go into their territory or bother them. They’ll kick us out if we do.”

“Mr. Hershberge is here to stay. To him, anyone who messes with the inner camp is his enemy.”

“Then… Why don’t we bring him with us and give him a tour of our base? I’m sure he’ll come around once he sees it for himself!” Vinny chimed in.

None of them was bragging about their base and the alliance’s capabilities. So, she was certain he would be 100% on board with them once he was there to see the base in all its glory.

“I’m afraid that’s not going to work,” Lara shook her head sadly. “Elsie, Mr. Hershberge’s granddaughter, was one of the first people who were accepted into the inner camp. They hold their selection annually.

The inner and outer camps weren’t completely separate. They had family living in that building. Plus, their safety was guaranteed here. These people were nothing like some of the camps Theresa had been to. They weren’t desperate for help.

Just then, Ava, who’d been dragged away, came running back to them.

“Lara, can you promise me that everything you said earlier was true?” Ava widened her eyes hopefully as she nervously looked at the group still talking in the distance from time to time. She wasn’t the only one waiting for an answer. A few young men and women had joined her.

Lara replied firmly, “Of course! Have I ever lied to you in the past? The outside world really is getting its feet back up. However, I’m only confident about the situation in the Eastern Camp, though.

For example, you can’t get any safer than Ansford. The city literally has two massive steel walls keeping the zombies at bay. There really are no zombies in the city at all.”

“The survivors there all have a place to stay in the city. Of course, there is also plenty of food going around. Everyone’s really nice. They didn’t hesitate to help newcomers, and they even gave us a tour of the place. This is a personal experience, mind you.

“Also, the place I’m living? God, let me tell you. It’s freaking amazing, okay? We’ve got two supermarkets that are packed to the brim with everything you could ever want. Pork, chicken, beef, all types of eggs, fruit, and veggies. We’ve got plenty of food to spare!”

“What the hell? That’s insane! In a good way!”

“F*ck the inner camp. That’s actual utopia!”

“Seriously, it’s unreal!”

Everyone was totally captivated by Lara’s words.

Well, everyone except for one woman. She merely sneered and rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right! I call bullsh*t! She’s totally making things up. I can’t believe you guys are stupid enough to believe her. God!”
