Ava and the others felt as though they’d been given a chilled glass of water in the middle of summer. They could barely keep the grins off their faces.

The middle–aged woman’s words were merely a justification for Rita and everyone else to blame the true victim of this entire fiasco.

She totally had that slap coming.

Fools who dared claim that it took two to tango weren’t just uncultured, but they were also idiots who sorely needed a rude awakening in the form of a harsh whacking to the face.

Rita, who’d been bawling her eyes out, immediately ceased her wailing. Instead, she could only stare at Theresa as she choked on her remaining tears, completely forgetting to continue putting on a performance.

Meanwhile, the onlookers who had been eagerly watching the drama unfold were utterly dumbstruck.

The middle–aged woman soon snapped out of her daze as she started screeching at the top of her lungs, “What disrespect! How could you do this to an elder?”

“Enough!” Herman cut her off before she could continue. “I told you I’ve got this handled. Or are you suggesting that you’re more suited to my position as the leader?”

Then, he swept his gaze over to Theresa and the others. “Alright, break it up. Tomorrow’s selection day. Go home and get ready.”

The crowd scattered as soon as his words fell. The woman who’d been slapped left with Rita, both of them sulking. Their faces were red and swollen as they staggered away from Theresa. However, the middle–aged woman didn’t forget to shoot a nasty glare at Theresa before leaving.

Theresa wasn’t one to take things lying down. So, she raised her hand to scare her. The woman immediately scurried away in terror.

“That’s enough out of you too!” Herman’s voice rang out behind her.

He glared at her darkly. “This is my camp. You’re an outsider here. Keep this up, and I’ll toss you out. Daylight or no daylight!”

The scowl on his face marred his wizened features as he glared daggers at her. It was clear that he wasn’t messing around.

Theresa met his gaze and chuckled softly. “Mr. Hershberge, you’re a good man. You wouldn’t have covered for us if you weren’t.”

She was referring to how Herman had lied to the inner camp members‘ faces to save their skins earlier.

Herman had told them that Theresa and her friends were newcomers to protect them. Theresa wasn’t so stupid that she couldn’t see that much.

The old coot might be a pain in the *ss, but that didn’t change the fact that he was a good person. Theresa could see that clear as day.

“Hmph!” Herman harrumphed, the furrow between his brows relaxing slightly. Still, he continued to play bad cop as he insisted, “I wasn’t protecting you. You’d best get out of my sight. You’re not welcome here!”

“Mr. Hershberge, we’re all good people here.” Theresa wasn’t deterred. “My offer is genuine. I’ve gotten both Ansford and Bransford well at hand. There are no zombies loitering around in even a single dark alleyway. I promise you that you can live a normal life there.”

Then, she continued, “There are only two sides in this apocalypse. Humans and zombies. You and I are both human. Please join us.”

Her confident words rang with truth and conviction. Herman, who had gotten a front row seat to the full Theresa effect, felt a part of him waver.

He pursed his lips and finally took good stock of her.

Theresa was clean, which was an impressive feat in itself. Clothes weren’t the first thing he clocked on. Rather, the fact that she could maintain such good hygiene stood out to him because it meant that she was a true powerhouse.

There was a healthy glow to her, completely different from the people in his camp. He might not have proof that she was a leader, but he could tell that she was no ordinary Jane.

Herman’s eyes slowly became unfocused as he thought her words over.

Finally, he looked at Theresa and said with a tinge of warmth in his tone, “I’m a simple man with simple needs. This humans–versus–zombies war isn’t something I’m interested in. I’d rather see all of you out of my camp before tomorrow!”
