The cold and robotic voice immediately prompted the woman known as A51 to return to her work.
After scribbling something on the paper, she repeated the question. “What was your name again?”
“Vinny Walsh. V–i–n–n–y, W–a–1–s–h.”
Gripping the pen tightly, she slowly wrote out the name.
“Emergency contact?”
Vinny glanced at Theresa, then gave out the same name. “Quentin Kerr.”
A51 unexpectedly questioned, “What about your father?”
“My father is dead.”
The answer made her hand pause mid–stroke. She quickly used the pen to blot out the letter she was about to write and recorded Quentin’s name instead.
Though she had made the correction in a fast and smooth motion, leaving no obvious traces in her movements, the small gesture did not escape Theresa’s notice.
When A51 finished the registration process, she handed each person a numbered wristband.
“Proceed inside once you’ve received your number.” A cold voice echoed from ahead. “Your number will be your only form of identification inside the inner camp.”
Theresa took the two wristbands from the woman, labeled No.7913 and No.7914.
Seeing the numbers, she was reminded of the Level 6 mental manipulation ability zombie labeled No.3 in the castle.
“Don’t lose your number.”
A soft whisper entered Theresa’s ear.
Theresa glanced at A51 in surprise, but A51 had already returned to her cold and mechanical self–she was registering the next person as if she’d never spoken to them at all.
“Let’s go, Theresa.” Vinny grabbed Theresa’s hand and pulled Theresa inside.
A51 resumed working mechanically as she registered the others, her voice devoid of emotion

Holding Vinny’s hand. Theresa followed the crowd into the compound of the inner camp.
A robotic “Ding!” sounded in her cars as soon as she stepped inside the building.
It was only then that she noticed the room was completely empty.
Three massive doors loomed over them from ahead.
The man in white brought everyone through the door on the far right.
Everything went pitch–black once they passed through the doors.
She could feel herself walking down a sloping ramp as she followed the others in front of her. The only light in the darkness came from the lamp swinging from the hand of the man in white.
It was hard to tell how long they walked, but she finally spotted a light ahead. The sudden brightness momentarily blinded her.
After her eyes adjusted, she realized that a long and brightly lit corridor stretched out before them. Rooms lined both sides of the corridor.
Someone among the crowd asked curiously, “Why are we here, sir?”
The man in white turned toward the person who spoke. “What’s your number?”
“7900.”
“Remove his number and take him away.”
As soon as the man from the crowd answered, the man in white made a sharp dismissive gesture with his hand.
Several men immediately stepped forward. They stripped the wristband from the man’s hand and dragged him away without a word.
The man tried to protest his treatment, but one of the guards quickly silenced him with a zap from a stun baton.
Those who witnessed the scene tensed up immediately.
Then, the man in white swept his gaze over the crowd and warned in an icy.voice, “From now onwards, no one is allowed to speak without my permission.
“You’re only allowed to do as you’re told. Anyone who disobeys will meet the same fate as him.”

“Your rooms are assigned by number, with ten people to a room. Meals will be delivered to you three times a day on a fixed schedule.
“Do not leave your rooms, and wait for our orders!”
With those final words, he turned and left.
A group of guards equipped with stun batons watched the crowd closely.
