The woman punched in a long string of codes and swiped several cards in succession. With a sharp beep, the door unlocked.
A rush of night air surged through the opening.
Above the canyon, the dark sky glittered with scattered stars, and beyond stretched a dense, shadowy forest.
They were out.
After the frantic escape, Vinny collapsed into a fit of harsh coughing, the cool breeze tearing at her throat.
The woman knelt beside her. “Are you alright?” She offered a hand, but Vinny flinched back.
The woman froze, then forced herself to remain calm. “How did you end up here? Where’s your father? What happened to him?”
“My dad’s dead,” Vinny replied, her voice flat.
“How?”
“Bitten by a zombie last year.” Vinny’s tone was flat, her face calm.
After surviving so long in the apocalypse, grief had long since dulled to numbness.
Even when she spoke of her father’s death, not the slightest emotion showed.
The woman’s chest tightened. Seeing that kind of calm on such a small face twisted something deep inside her.
“Then how have you been surviving?”
Vinney tilted her head, confused by the question. She glanced up at Theresa before answering simply, “Just surviving. I was with my uncle before. But he tried to make me into food. Theresa saved me.”
The woman’s heart lurched violently. Terror and sorrow flooded her face, and before she could stop herself, she pulled Vinny into a fierce embrace. “I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”
“Let me go!” Vinny struggled, panic flaring in her eyes.
Theresa watched. She no longer doubted–this woman was Vinny’s mother.

But the woman shook her head, releasing Vinny and shoving her back into Theresa’s arms. “No, you have to go. Get out of here right now!”
Behind them, footsteps echoed down the corridor. Alarms blared overhead.
The woman’s urgency sharpened. “Go! You must never come back! You don’t understand–this place, its power, it’s beyond anything you can imagine. Everyone taken here is nothing but a test subject for the zombie virus. There’s no escape but death! Don’t believe a single word they tell you everything is a lie. Run!”
“What about you?” Theresa demanded.
“I’ll be fine. Go! Take care of Vinny!”
The woman pushed them out with all her strength, then pulled the door in front of her and shut it heavily.
Vinny stared at the closed door, the woman’s words still echoing in her ears, and an odd feeling rose within her chest.
She kept her gaze fixed on the figure who had just left, blinking slowly.
Something about her felt strangely familiar, and the warmth of her embrace still lingered, gentle and comforting.
“Theresa, was she good?” Vinny asked softly.
“Yes,” Theresa answered firmly. “I’ll make sure you see her again.”
At that, Vinny’s tense little face softened.
Theresa led Vinny out of the canyon.
They found themselves not inside the camp but in a stretch of remote mountain forest–the gate they’d escaped through opened into the hills.
That proved one thing–the inner compound was vast. An entire massive camp hidden within the canyon, backed by a force far from ordinary.
But no matter what, now that Theresa had escaped, she would bring the whole thing down.
She had gone into the inner compound to dig up information on the Starborn Order. Once she had the evidence, she would act. The Starborn Order was on her blacklist–a forbidden enemy
