“Apologies, Mr. Green. It’s not that we weren’t sincere. We’ve just been swamped lately, so we had our subordinates handle the talks,” said the man leading them.
Pinned to his chest was an ID card stamped with the letters S–Rank. This was one of the real higher–ups.
Theresa leaned past the group, searching the hall. Gabriella, the one from last time, was nowhere to be seen.
“It’s quite a surprise running into you. You’re the only survivors we’ve come across at sea, and that makes you very valuable to us.”
“Skip the pleasantries.” Bennie cut him off. “What kind of deal are you proposing?”
“I want your people,” the S–Rank leader said, fixing his gaze on Bennie. “Divine Academy is humanity’s last hope. We’re gathering the brightest and strongest from around the globe for our program. You’ve seen the world outside–zombies everywhere, society in ruins. Divine Academy is committed to ending this apocalypse and opening the door to a new world. That’s why we need more of you.”
He lifted his chin, voice ringing with conviction. “Bring us your best, and I’ll hand over the oil fields for free.”
The words left Bennie frowning. He glanced at Theresa.
“You’re saying you’ll just give us the oil fields?” she asked.
“That’s right. Deliver us the finest people you have, and the fields are yours,” the S–Rank leader declared.
“We’re in,” Theresa answered without hesitation.
Bennie snapped his head toward her. He looked around at the group, then tugged her to her feet. “Hold on. We need to talk this over.”
He pulled Theresa out the door.
“Theresa, we can’t join this plan!” Bennie’s expression was dead serious. “This place isn’t what it looks like. At first, I thought just a handful of survivors were living here, but now I’m sure—this is the wrong crowd to mess with.
“Did you notice the land on their island? The whole place is covered with training grounds, not

a single patch for farming. And yet they’re feeding over three thousand people. That means their food and water come from outside. That means they’ve got territory out there too.”
Bennie drew in a long breath. “This Divine Academy is too d*mn mysterious. Before the apocalypse, I’d never even heard of them. And now, in the middle of all this chaos, they still manage to keep an operation this massive? No way this is some ordinary group. Their pitch sounds noble on the surface, but come on–this is the apocalypse. Nobody knows what they’re really after. We can’t sign on with them. Forget the oil fields for now. We’ll find another way.”
Theresa studied Bennie, cautious yet jittery as always, and gave his shoulder a light pat. “Bennie, after all these years, you’re still the same–too cautious.”
Bennie just stared at her, speechless.
Too cautious? What–she’s trying to call me a coward?
“Go back there and take those d*mn oil fields!” She smacked him on the forehead. “Quit acting like a coward. Every time shit hits the fan, you shrink back—what kind of man does that make you? Divine Academy, my ass. They’re practically at our doorstep and you’re still holding back? Grow a spine!”
Bennie just stared at her, speechless.
“You know as well as I do, this is the apocalypse. No laws, no rules. If we’d never crossed paths, fine. But now that we have? There’s no turning back. Why on earth do you think if you say no, they’ll just give up? They want people, and we are people. Our Alliance is sitting right under their noses–where the hell do you plan on hiding? When two sides clash, only the bold walk away alive. If you don’t draw your blade and keep backing down, they’ll bend you over and tear you apart.”
Bennie had nothing to say. He just froze.
She’s got a point.
“In an apocalypse, there’s never any turning back,” Theresa told Bennie. “Toughen up. Face it head–on.”
Divine Academy’s got their eyes on us, and we’ve got ours on them. Look at the three Ark Camps before- perfect examples. In the apocalypse, why should one person give way to another? A threat shows up, you take it out. That’s how survival works–eat or be eaten. Nobody owes anybody mercy. One thing’s for sure -nobody gets to stake a claim right under my nose and walk away comfortable.
“But who are we supposed to send?” Bennie asked.
“Me, of course.” Theresa grinned at Bennie’s clueless look.
