Theresa slammed the truck into gear, heaving with all her might as the others hurriedly piled those things against the security booth, sealing the entrance completely.
In moments, the booth was stuffed so tightly that not even a mouse could squeeze through.
With one final push, Theresa sent the stripped–down truck crashing.
The elite zombie in the driver’s seat flattened instantly, its gleamstones popping from its skull, and the booth was finally secured.
A collective sigh of relief rose from everyone inside.
Zombies still lingered in Everbrook One, but the numbers within paled in comparison to the swarming hordes outside.
Theresa had already eliminated a hundred or so, and the neighborhood now looked almost deserted.
Some zombies remained trapped in buildings, howling from every corner as she walked through the upscale complex. Yet, they were all contained, unable to escape.
She made her way to the far end of the neighborhood, toward the building closest to the financial tower.
“Let’s rest here for a while,” she suggested.
Quentin worked quickly, popping the lock on the front door.
The apartments were one per floor, with elevators that opened directly into each unit. Without an access card–and power being nonexistent–there was no way up.
Theresa opted for a ground–floor apartment. As always, Quentin slid the door open, and they stepped inside.
Fortune favored them.
The apartment was vacant, but it was well–maintained and fully furnished. Even better, there was food.
“Theresa! The kitchen’s stocked! Everything’s still edible!” Steven called out.

perishable items–edible bird’s nest, exotic seafood–had long spoiled, but some alcohol and sodas remained drinkable.
Coke had lost its fizz and tasted odd, but that hardly mattered. Steven and the others eagerly grabbed bottles, thrilled to taste soda untouched for four years.
“It’s so good!” they cheered.
The expired Coke had lost everything but its sweetness, with just a faint, strange aftertaste–but that alone was enough to electrify their taste buds.
It
gave
them a sensation of satisfaction they’d never known before.
It tasted incredible, a moment of pure bliss.
“Theresa, have some too!” Steven handed bottles to her and Quentin.
“We’re fine,” Theresa replied, glancing at the pile of food. “You guys can split it among yourselves.”
With that, she walked away, leaving everyone’s eyes shining at the treasure trove of rare goodies.
Theresa didn’t even touch a thing–she simply gave it all to them.
“Theresa is amazing!”
“Of course she is!” Steven answered.
“Who is Theresa, anyway?”
Memories of their first encounter surfaced.
A formidable gang had once invaded their camp, tough and ruthless. One gesture from Theresa, and the entire group fell silent and withdrew without resistance.
Later, when she joined them in the inner camp, her effortless display of strength left everyone in awe.
“All I know is I’m sticking with her!” Steven declared, eyes shining.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
No doubt about it–Theresa had guided them through the zombie–infested city, never abandoning a single person.
She was a leader worth following, unconditionally.
