They needed to scrounge up some reliable weapons in this critical hour.

Theresa cast a quick glance at the horde of zombies outside, her fingers gripping a fuse.

The fuse slithered through the length of the building, and roughly three hundred feet from their positionbang!

A gunshot echoed, and all the zombies outside froze for a moment before converging toward the source of the noise.

Theresa observed the thinning horde, calculating the perfect moment to act. But before they could move, a tremendous crash reverberated from the lobby behind them.

The massive group of zombies they had temporarily diverted had shattered the glass doors.

The lobby erupted with the unholy wails and thundering footsteps of the advancing undead.

Theresa didn’t hesitate. “Run!

The glass doors ahead swung open, and at her command, everyone bolted toward Everbrook One.

As they dashed, the group couldn’t help but admire Theresa’s sharp instincts and courage.

She had been rightthere was no way they could have stayed in the building.

Urgh! Urgh! Urgh!

Awooo-

The zombies outside, lured away by the gunshot, caught the scent of living humans and barreled back toward them.

One after another, zombies with grotesquely twisted heads and jagged mouths lunged forward, howling. Judging by their mangled features and contorted limbs, these zombies had likely perished in horrific accidents or endured brutal injuries before dying.

The closest one was particularly grotesque. Half its face had been flattened as if crushed by a carits eyeball sunken and shattered, the ear nothing more than a ragged flap flapping like a fish fin as it shuffled forward in a lopsided gait.

Yet despite their deformities, the zombies pursued the living with a terrifying single- mindedness.

The carwreck zombie lunged for the group, aiming directly at Steven, who was in the center.

Steven swung the aluminum chair leg he’d grabbed earlier.

Clang!

The chair leg connected with the zombie’s headbut it was like striking solid stone.

Though its face appeared fragile, its bones and skin had mutated into something far more resilient.

The chair leg proved useless. The carwreck zombie seized it instead, yanking Steven toward it with terrifying strength.

It was a strengthtype mutant zombie.

Just as Steven was about to be torn from the group, a hand clamped onto his arm. The grip was so powerful that the strengthtype mutant zombie froze momentarily, nearly losing its hold.

A flash of steelTheresa’s katana sliced through the air, severing the zombie’s neck cleanly. She pulled Steven back into the group.

Move! Faster!

Ahead, the entrance to Everbrook One finally came into view.

The gate was sealed tight. Unlike the flimsy fences of ordinary neighborhoods, this one was an imposing iron barrier at least ten feet tall. Even the security booth resembled a military checkpoint.

Too bad there weren’t any guards left inside.

Theresa’s eyes landed on the security booth with its door hanging open. The main gate might have been locked, but the booth’s door was broken.

Both front and back entrances were damaged, with one hanging half off its frame.

Everyone, through the security booth!

Theresa was the first to leap inside. She scanned the interior, spotting a stalled car near the

entrance.
