Chapter 578 Opening the Way

Theresa sat half–asleep on the edge of the couch, listening to every sound around her. The stormy night outside was filled with gunfire. Each shot was another descent into hell, and that night, more people had died.

Out of the 3,000 who had been dropped here, fewer than 100 were still alive by the third day. Of those, 30 were with Theresa.

At dawn on the second day, the rain finally stopped. Theresa looked at the clearing sky and checked the time. “We can head out now.”

“Yes, Boss!”

“Yes, Boss!”

Steven and the others quickly packed up. The large group that had been watching them near the door also rose to their feet.

“Let’s go too,” Dorian said as he watched Theresa move.

“Yeah, I was thinking the same thing,” Patrick murmured, his eyes fixed on her. “Follow her. Let her take the lead.”

Dorian turned and met his gaze. Part of him hated the thought–such a beautiful woman dying would be a waste–but survival mattered more. If following Theresa meant she cleared the way for them, so be it.

Theresa wasn’t stupid. She saw right through their little schemes. In that case, who would become zombie bait would remain an open question for now.

She picked up her blade, yanked open the curtains with a sharp swish, and banged loudly against the glass, drawing as many zombies toward the front of the building as possible. “Move out!” she ordered as she led her people to the door.

At the entrance, Patrick and Dorian’s groups quickly stepped aside to let them pass. Theresa ignored them and signaled Quentin to open the door.

The space outside was clear of zombies. When Dorian’s team had broken in the day before, they’d already cleared the entrance. Now all the zombies were trapped beyond the building.

As Quentin swung the door open, he spotted a struggling straggler among the piles of corpses. A lone zombie head, its body hacked away, dragged a length of pulsing vein as it writhed in the heap. Its jaw gaped wide, snapping as it swayed toward the doorway.

Bam!

With a sharp kick, Quentin sent the head flying. “Clear.”

Theresa nodded and followed him out, stepping over the sea of bodies. Among them, she noticed one skeleton picked entirely clean–one of Patrick’s abandoned teammates from two days ago.

The bones bore teeth marks, fingers gnawed down to nothing. Seven out of ten digits had been torn off from the tendon, their joints scattered nearby, crushed into warped lumps.

It was utter savageness.

These zombies had been starved too long. Anyone who fell among them had no chance of turning–caught alive, they’d be stripped to the bone before infection even set in.

Her gaze shifted to the reinforced steel doors of the next building. Everbrook One had been a luxury complex in Stratford, and its security measures were first–rate. The doors had held firm through two days of siege.

Outside the half–shattered security glass, zombies pressed in shoulder to shoulder. Most had already been drawn toward the windows by her noise, leaving only 20 or so clawing at the

entrance.

“Hurrrk–hurrrk-”

“Arrghhh-”

Gray eyes bulged as rotting faces slammed against the glass, smearing it with streaks of black- brown slime washed down from two nights of rain. The grotesque fluid mixed with their pallid flesh until the windows seemed ready to burst.

Sensing living prey, the zombies beat frantically against the doors.

“Stay close to me. If anyone falls behind, I won’t save you,” Theresa warned without turning, her voice even as she stepped toward the exit.

“Yes!”

“Yes!”

Steven and the others chorused back.
