Just from that display of blade work, he already knew to tread carefully around Theresa. He had seen her kill before and was certain that in close quarters, he wouldn’t even have time to lift a hand before she slit his throat. Her combat skills were terrifying.

But it was Dorian’s first time witnessing Theresa in action. Watching her impossible speed and precision, his eyes trembled. “She definitely has speed and strength abilities.”

“Exactly,” Patrick agreed. “And both are at a very high level.”

“Let’s go!” Patrick urged when Theresa cut down the zombies at the gate and darted off. He bolted after her, with Dorian quickly leading his people to follow. Theresa was already running northwest toward the financial building.

The zombies crowding at the windows of the complex turned, drawn to her, and swarmed after her trail. But because Patrick and Dorian’s groups followed close behind, they found themselves caught as the tide of zombies closed in from the rear.

Running in someone else’s shadow meant one didn’t have to clear the path–but it also meant the living dead caught up from behind. Forced to fight as they ran, Patrick and Dorian’s people swung their weapons desperately.

Theresa glanced back at them, at the crowd now blocking off the zombies in pursuit. “Now! Climb up!” she shouted.

The two men finally realized their mistake. They had schemed to use Theresa, but now they had become the shield keeping her safe. Outsmarted by their own cleverness–what a disaster.

The northwest corner had no gate, just a six–foot–high wall crowned with barbed wire. The power was long gone, so the wires carried no current, but the sharp barbs still posed a risk.

Theresa boosted Quentin up first. His combat suit, made of high–grade polymer issued by the Alliance, was sturdy enough that even the barbs couldn’t tear it.

“Quentin, cover six.”

“Clear to go, Beautiful!” Quentin called after dropping down the other side, and there were only a few scattered zombies in sight.

With him covering, Theresa vaulted up, her movements fluid as she landed on the far side.

Bringing Quentin always paid off, especially among the dead. His unusual physique was a walking bug in this apocalypse. The moment she landed, zombies that hadn’t stirred before

Meanwhile, Theresa slashed through five zombies in quick succession as more poured from the

street corner.

“Ten seconds! If you’re not over by then, I’m leaving!” she shouted.

She owed them nothing. They had offered her no benefit, and she was only helping because she didn’t mind their company. If they couldn’t keep up, that was their problem. She would never risk her life for anyone else’s.
