Danielle stood up and pulled Niki behind her. “How much? I’ll transfer the money to you.”
“You?” Paula’s eyes flickered with scorn. “Aren’t you just spending the Davidson family’s money? Even if you send it to me, you’ll just go running to Alex for it in the end, won’t you?”
Danielle’s expression grew darker. “What do you want then?”
Paula looked as if she had something stuck in her throat. Sure, she could demand compensation, but it wasn’t as if she needed the money. And that limited edition? There was no way they’d get their hands on it anyway. She had no choice but to swallow her anger.
She gritted her teeth. “Forget it.”
What a pair of jinxes, that mother and daughter.
Without another word, she spun on her heel and strode back inside.
Bianca wasted no time letting the news slip at just the right volume—loud enough for Danielle to hear. “Some people will never belong in our world. Even if a sparrow lands on the highest branch, it’ll never be a phoenix. No matter how hard they try, they’re still just sparrows.”
Niki bit her lip. “Mom, did I mess things up?”
Danielle shook her head. “It’s all right. I’m here.”
At that moment, the old lady emerged from the kitchen.
“Go have a seat in the living room,” she said, looking Danielle up and down. “Why do you seem more reserved now than before, even though you haven’t been back in ages?”
Danielle was at a loss for words.
The old lady took Niki’s hand and led her toward the living room.
Danielle followed, her head foggy and her steps heavy.
“Are you feeling unwell?” the old lady asked, noticing how pale and drained Danielle looked.
“I think I might be coming down with something. Maybe a cold.”
The old lady immediately looked concerned. “Have you been drinking the nourishing soups I made? The doctor said you need better nutrition. You can’t just keep working all the time, and stop staying up so late.”
“I have, I promise.”
“Go on, get upstairs and rest,” the old lady insisted. “I’ll bring you some medicine.”
“Still so touchy,” the old lady chuckled.
Bianca gave a pointed snort. “Your wife’s sick. Aren’t you going to check on her?”
Danielle’s head throbbed even more with all the noise.
Alexander’s gaze landed on her. Her lips were pale, her face drawn. Without a word, he crossed the room in a few strides.
“Where does it hurt?” he asked softly, reaching up to feel her forehead. “Do you have a fever?”
Her skin was warm to the touch.
“Can you walk?” he asked, eyes searching hers.
Danielle looked up at him, confused.
But before she could respond, he swept her off her feet, lifting her into his arms.

Sooooo complicated sigh* Simply pls thanks....
Where is Chapter 545 - 554? I thought there'll be 9-10 chapters per update....
I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
I'm already in chapter 432 ATM and I have the impression that the story is so slow. Daniele remains in the dark, her reputation is low and inexistent, her accomplishment and professional abilities are stiĺl hidden, her enemies are taking the joy in humiliatihg her. No evolution in the plot? Please don't stay long in this, readers might lose interest in the long run....
