Alexander’s gaze drifted to the window, his eyes turning vacant, lost somewhere far beyond the city lights.
He’d grown used to pain and restraint over the years. That was simply his way now.
Ever since the day he’d chosen to push Danielle away with cold indifference, he’d understood the path ahead would be lonely and hard—one he’d have to walk alone.
He absently touched the plaster cast on his chest, a wry smile tugging at his lips. “This time, they didn’t even bother pretending—the car crash was a direct hit. At least it saves me the trouble of guessing.”
“You can still joke?” Rebecca’s brow furrowed, her voice edged with reproach.
“The doctor said your injuries were severe. If things had been any worse, we might not be having this conversation. Can’t you try, just once, to look after yourself?”
Finally, Alexander shut his laptop and set it on his lap, his expression softening. “This life stopped belonging to me a long time ago.”
“As long as Danielle and Niki are safe, what does a little pain matter?”
He paused, his voice dropping, a hint of bitterness slipping through, almost unnoticed even by himself. “The way I am now, I’m the last person who deserves to be by their side.”
“It doesn’t matter who Danielle chooses in the future. As long as he treats her well, as long as he takes care of Niki, I’ll be at peace.”
Rebecca saw the sorrow buried deep in his eyes, and her own heart ached for him.
She knew how much Alexander loved Danielle and Niki. But for a thousand reasons, he could only watch from afar, as if even approaching them had become a luxury he couldn’t afford.
“They’re both safe now,” she said quietly. “The Strategic Intelligence Agency is watching over them. Nothing’s going to happen.”
Lifting a box of pills from the table, she fixed him with a steady look. “What you need to do now is cooperate with my treatment and focus on your recovery.”
“Your emotional state was fragile to begin with. If you keep pushing yourself like this, it’ll only get worse.”
But Alexander had already picked up his laptop, reopening it and resting his fingers on the keyboard. His voice was cool and distant. “I have my own pace. My own way of handling things.”
Rebecca watched his stubborn profile and knew he was shutting her out again.

Where is Chapter 545 - 554? I thought there'll be 9-10 chapters per update....
I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
I'm already in chapter 432 ATM and I have the impression that the story is so slow. Daniele remains in the dark, her reputation is low and inexistent, her accomplishment and professional abilities are stiĺl hidden, her enemies are taking the joy in humiliatihg her. No evolution in the plot? Please don't stay long in this, readers might lose interest in the long run....
