A gentle, warm smile played on his lips, not too obvious but unmistakably kind.
Danielle stirred the soup in her bowl, lost in thought. She couldn’t help but ponder these things—after all, everyone else seemed to be speculating about it too.
“So—”
Nathan cut her off. “Coming back home is just me returning to my own life. I’m not after the Davidson family’s company. Whether that business is mine or not, it’s still my home.”
“I need to make a living, so I joined Vanguard Technologies.”
Nathan looked at her. “I’m not the schemer people think I am. I have no interest in power games or fighting over things that don’t belong to me.”
“It’s clear Alex wants to hand over the entire family and company to me, but I can’t just let him give up everything he’s worked for. Even if we’re not that close, a decent man doesn’t take what means the world to someone else.”
“That company is his life’s work.”
Danielle frowned a little as she listened. “You could’ve started with the family business, though. I just didn’t expect you’d choose Vanguard Technologies instead.”
Nathan let out a quiet laugh.
“Alex is naturally suspicious. If I joined the Davidson company, he’d immediately see me as a rival. That would put everyone in the family on edge.”
“I just want to live my life, not stir up chaos in the Davidson family.”
Nathan’s thoughts were always so calm and measured. It was clear he’d come back with the whole family in mind.
A mature man always knows how to balance his own future with the bigger picture. But Danielle doubted Alexander was as shortsighted as Nathan made him out to be.
“You think of everything,” she said softly.
She scooped up a spoonful of soup and offered it to Nathan.
He opened his mouth and drank it down.
“Does it taste alright?”
Nathan watched her face carefully.
“I know what you’re worried about,” he said quietly. “Millie hates you because of Alex. She’s locked up now, and she’ll probably be convicted. But what if she still has people on the outside? Her mother, for example. Just because Millie’s in prison doesn’t mean you’re safe.”
“She’s already tried to hurt you. Who’s to say her mother won’t do the same?”
Nathan’s eyes grew dark as he leaned in, voice low. “Leanne spent years raising her daughter, putting everything she had into her. In her eyes, you destroyed all of that. Do you really think she wouldn’t hate you?”
“You have a daughter of your own. Maybe she wants you to feel what it’s like to lose her.”
Danielle’s hand trembled, and she nearly dropped the bowl. Nathan reached out, steadying her wrist and catching the bowl before it could fall.
He wasn’t wrong. Leanne was the type to take things to extremes. Danielle was always on guard, always careful, but being careful didn’t guarantee nothing would happen.
Sometimes, if you want to be safe, you have to make sure the threat is dealt with completely.

Where is Chapter 545 - 554? I thought there'll be 9-10 chapters per update....
I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
I'm already in chapter 432 ATM and I have the impression that the story is so slow. Daniele remains in the dark, her reputation is low and inexistent, her accomplishment and professional abilities are stiĺl hidden, her enemies are taking the joy in humiliatihg her. No evolution in the plot? Please don't stay long in this, readers might lose interest in the long run....
