Derrick fell silent; the corner of his mouth twitched. What kind of nonsense was she up to this early in the morning?
On the other end of the line, Evie sounded half–asleep. Marie’s words had caught her completely off guard.
“What did you just say you want?”
“A sister–in–law,” Marie replied matter–of–factly.
God knew how many years the Redwood had been fretting over Eddie and Evie’s marriage prospects–it was enough to drive anyone insane.
The funny thing was, Evie already had a boyfriend.
They’d been dating for three years now. And every time Marie thought about that, she couldn’t help but feel indignant. That girl actually has a boyfriend? How is that even possible?
It defied logic–but somehow, it was true.
Evie had been desperate to marry the guy, but apparently, the Redwood elders disapproved. They’d shut her down with a single line, “Your brother must get married first.”
That had infuriated Evie.
Because Eddie, over the years, hadn’t liked anyone. There hadn’t been a single woman who caught his eye. Waiting for him to get married? She’d grow old first!
Evie had been so anxious that she’d started introducing women to him nonstop–Falvarian, Yalvorian, Relovorian–if they were even remotely decent, she dragged them in front of him.
But Eddie didn’t like a single one. Eventually, he’d stopped going home altogether, which only made Evie even more frustrated.
She’d been obsessed with finding him a wife; she wanted him married off more than he did!
So when she heard Marie ask if she wanted a sister–in–law, she practically exploded.
“Marie, are you insane? Calling me first thing in the morning just to humiliate me?”
Evie, who had long since gone mad over this whole sister–in–law issue, had endured plenty of teasing from others these past few years. But never had anyone actually called her at dawn to ask that question.

Naturally, she thought Marie was mocking her.
Marie snorted. “Hey, I asked if you want a sister–in–law. I’m offering you one. How is that humiliating you?”
What kind of logic was that?

“I ask if you want a sister–in–law, and you think I’m insulting you? You really think that’s how I do my insults?”
Evie paused.
To be fair, Marie wasn’t exactly the type to verbally humiliate people.
“So… you’re really not mocking me?”
“Of course not! I’m serious–do you want a sister–in–law or not?”
Evie hesitated. “Of course I do! Who wouldn’t? Wait–do you actually have one?”
Was this a joke? If Marie really could hand her a sister–in–law, she’d say yes in a heartbeat.
Her brother’s hopelessness had been driving her crazy for years. She’d paraded countless beauties before him–different figures, different skin tones, all stunning–and he hadn’t so much as blinked at any of them.
She’d scoured the globe trying to find someone, and he’d turned them all down.
Every time she thought about it, her blood pressure spiked.
“I do,” Marie said smugly. “And your brother already seems to have feelings for her.”
“What?” Evie nearly shouted. “You’re kidding me.”
The shock was immediate. She simply couldn’t believe it,
Over the years, she’d shown him every type of woman imaginable–tall, short, curvy, slim, light–skinned, dark–skinned, tan–and he hadn’t cared for any of them.
And now, suddenly, there was someone he liked? Evie’s curiosity piqued. She needed to know what
this woman looked like.
“It’s true,” Marie assured her. “Would I lie to you?”
Evie was quiet for a beat.
Lie to me? Well, if anyone else had said Eddie liked someone, she might’ve believed it.
