Artemis frowned when she caught him staring at her like that. “Why are you looking at me that way?”
“Where’s Tessa?” he asked coldly. Hadn’t we agreed he would bring Tessa back with him?
“She’s not coming back,” Dale said flatly.
“What?” Artemis‘ voice rose. “Not coming back? Why not?”
That little brat–Artemis had already given in, allowed her to return home; what more did she want? If she refused to come back, what was going to happen to the mess surrounding Ashen Pact? Artemis‘ face darkened.
She walked over and sat beside Dale. “You, as her father, went to get her yourself, and she still wouldn’t come back?”
Dale pressed his aching temples between his fingers.
All he could hear echoing in his head were Tessa’s words—accusing Artemis of cheating, claiming the twins weren’t his.
The pain in his head roared like thunder; he felt like he might explode.
“What does she want, then?” Artemis snapped, her tone sharp now.
Just ten minutes before Dale had returned, she’d gotten another call–one of her resource sites had been taken.
And the person behind it wasn’t Marie or Derrick… it was Victor, the man with Tessa.
She had originally planned to deal with that girl once Dale brought her home.
In other words…
If the girl refused to act as a bridge between them and Victor, then Artemis would lock her up- hide her away.
If Victor had even the slightest feeling for her, Artemis didn’t believe he would continue attacking Ashen Pact.
After all…
Their enemies were growing in number, but the fiercest ones were Victor, Derrick, and their group.

If she could force Victor to back off, Derrick and Marie would naturally follow; Victor himself would make sure of it, as long as he didn’t want Tessa to be hurt.
But now Dale had returned empty–handed.
When he still said nothing, only kept looking at her, Artemis‘ expression hardened completely.
“Why are you staring at me like that? I asked you a question!”
“She didn’t ask for anything,” Dale said after a long pause. “She just doesn’t want to come back.”
“Doesn’t want to come back?” Artemis‘ voice grew shrill. “This is her home! She’d give up her own family for some man?”
The warmth in her face drained away, replaced by an icy glint in her eyes–one Dale had never seen before.
He looked at her, his face hardening. “Home? Who besides you and your children even see this place as home?”
In that instant, he realized something bitter, he had fathered many children, but the only ones who still saw Black Mountain as home were Artemis‘–and even among them… there might be some who weren’t his.
Tessa’s words played in his mind like a curse, circling endlessly, impossible to silence or forget.
His expression grew colder by the second.
Hearing the edge of mockery in his tone, Artemis stiffened. “What do you mean by that?”
“Dan and Tessa refused to come back,” she said sharply. “Are you trying to say it’s my fault?”
That tone–it was. He was blaming her.
Artemis‘ anger flared. “Don’t go too far! I never said they couldn’t come home. You’ve seen how I’ve treated Dan all these years! And Tessa–she’s not even in Redwood! You expect me to chase her down to Rivermount and treat her well there too?”
Her voice grew more agitated with every word.
“I’ve treated your children like my own, no matter who gave birth to them. But my sincerity has never been returned; and now you’re saying it’s my fault they’ve grown distant from you?”
Dale said nothing, but the look in his eyes was dark and frightening.
When a person’s world started to crumble–when their interests and power slipped away–any
