The next time Zinnia heard news of Yuri, it was a report about a massive internal collapse at Canyon Tech in Nordica. All of the company’s illegal operations had been exposed. High-level executives who ran the various criminal enterprises were being arrested by Interpol, though the big boss of Canyon remained at large.
Zinnia watched the news, knowing that Yuri was that boss. She hadn’t seen him since their last, painful conversation. Yale Ford had officially returned to take over the Ford Group, and Yuri had vanished without a trace.
“Where did he go?” Zinnia murmured, her brow furrowed.
She had never believed Yuri was irredeemably evil, especially after learning that his father was an undercover agent killed by Sawyer, not the Fords. She had thought he would see the light. After their last meeting, her intuition told her he was planning something. Now, seeing the entire illegal network of Canyon Tech exposed and its leaders arrested, she felt certain Yuri was behind it.
If that was true, then he was in grave danger. The ones who got away would surely be after him. Zinnia felt a knot of worry in her stomach. Whatever Yuri had done, he deserved to be judged by the law, not by criminals who would show him no mercy.
But time passed, and there was no further news of Yuri. It was as if he had simply vanished from the face of the earth.
One evening, as she was leaving the hospital after her shift, she saw Superintendent Kaleb walking toward her.
“Dr. Quinn.”
The somber expression on his face sent a wave of unease through her. “He asked me to give this to you,” Kaleb said, handing her a letter.
The feeling of dread intensified, filling her chest. With trembling hands, she took the envelope. “Is he… is he okay?” she asked, her voice catching.
“He’s dead,” Kaleb said, his voice heavy. “He helped us take down Canyon Tech’s entire operation from the inside. During the arrest of one of the shareholders, he was shot in the heart. He didn’t make it.”
Tears spilled from Zinnia’s eyes. Her intuition had been right. He hadn’t turned himself in, but he had still done what needed to be done.
