Time-Limited Love: A Contract Expired, Not Renewed novel Chapter 408

He walked up to Yuri. “Mr. Ford, hello.”

Yuri recognized him as well—the man who had been rescued in Selvoria. Of the three of them pulled from the rubble that day, this man’s injuries had been the lightest, thanks to Zinnia. Yuri’s impression of him wasn’t favorable, so his own expression remained cool.

“And you are?”

“I was Sherman Spencer’s direct superior. Superintendent Kaleb.”

Sherman. The name was painfully familiar. His mother, Violet Ford, had whispered it in his ear for over twenty years. Sherman was the name of his father, the low-life thug who had been brutally beaten to death by the Fords.

Yuri stared at the man, trying to process his introduction, but it made no sense. Direct superior? Superintendent? He couldn’t connect those words to a common thug. He looked at Kaleb with confusion, certain he had the wrong person.

Before he could speak, Kaleb continued, “That’s right. Your father, Sherman. I was his commanding officer and his handler.”

Kaleb’s words made Zinnia, who had been about to leave, stop in her tracks. She understood before Yuri did.

“Your father, Sherman, was an Interpol agent working undercover inside Sawyer’s crime syndicate.”

The statement confirmed Zinnia’s suspicion. She whipped her head around to look at Yuri. He was completely frozen, his usual detached expression replaced by sheer shock and disbelief.

“Sawyer discovered his identity,” Kaleb explained. “By the time we sent a team to extract him, it was too late. His body was later recovered from international waters. For confidential security reasons, your father’s true identity was never officially released.”

Kaleb went on to explain the full story. Sawyer’s criminal empire had a complex network both at home and abroad. Yuri’s father had been the Interpol agent sent to infiltrate it and gather evidence. But he was discovered, tortured to death by Sawyer’s men, and his body dumped at sea. Shortly after, Kaleb was severely injured during another international operation and fell into a coma. By the time he recovered, years had passed, filled with other classified missions. He was the only one who could verify Sherman’s status as an undercover agent. Without his testimony, Sherman was officially considered a traitor, a reputation that had earned him scorn from his former colleagues. Now, twenty-six years later, his name could finally be cleared.

“I’m sorry I’m so late,” Kaleb said, apologizing directly to Yuri. “Your father’s service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.” He gave Yuri one last, complicated look, as if there was much more left unsaid.

After Kaleb left, Yuri remained rooted to the spot, his mind a complete blank. He didn’t know how to react. He just stood there for a long time before slowly lifting his eyes to Zinnia. His eyes were bloodshot as he tried to force a smile, but his facial muscles seemed to have forgotten how to move.
