Noelle had stepped forward largely out of a mother's instinct.
She had immediately seen that Zayne was being neglected.
Although he was holding a toy, those big eyes of his seemed to lack their usual brightness. Zayne only reacted when she walked closer. His gaze was unfocused as he waved his arms around wildly. "Go away!"
Noelle immediately confirmed that there was something wrong with Zayne's eyes.
Zayne had been born with a hereditary eye condition, so she had always strictly limited his screen time. She figured that after their divorce, Clifford had probably never paid attention to that at all.
She smiled wryly. "You've got some temper, kid."
Lola walked forward. "Ms. Lucy, do you know her?"
Before Noelle could answer, Zayne's face lit up. He struggled to his feet, nearly toppling over. "Mom, Mom!"
Lola frowned, and her expression darkened. She kicked Zayne on the leg. "Shut up! I told you not to call me that!"
Zayne froze as he was kicked onto the grass. He collapsed and clutched his toy as tears slipped out.
Noelle felt a dull pain in her chest. Then, Lola explained, "Ms. Lucy, don't misunderstand. He's a kid who's related to one of the team members. He just likes to shout at people. I don't know him at all."
Lola just denied knowing Zayne right to his face. His crying stopped immediately as confusion flashed in his eyes. He wondered if his ears had betrayed him.
Noelle said with displeasure. "Whoever this child belongs to, you still shouldn't have kicked him. He looks quite young, and one hard kick could break his leg. If that had happened, would you be able to live with yourself?"
Lola's expression turned awkward, but her mask hid it. "I'll call this kid's relative so he stops running around."
Lola pulled Lucas away and left.
Noelle couldn't stand it anymore and crouched down to check Zayne's injuries. Fortunately, although Lola had kicked him hard, his leg wasn't fractured. Noelle asked the legal counsel to fetch mosquito repellent and some medicine. Then, she sprayed them on his wounds.
Zayne's vacant eyes turned toward her. "You smell like my mom."
Noelle's hand froze, and she tried to play it off casually. "Really?"
Noelle didn't press him for more.
