Xavier gave a faint smile. “What problem could there be?”
“Laura Harmon, I know a thing or two about the law. Since the police have been called, the will naturally cooperate with the investigation.”
Aveline gave him a cold glance, then looked away without a word.
Fiona scoffed, “Are you blaming Aveline for calling the police?”
Xavier smiled faintly, ignoring Fiona, and just asked the officer when they would go to the Beltran Hotel.
The officer said they needed to go back to the station to file some paperwork first. Xavier said, “Alright, I’ll see you two officers out.”
Josephine ran into them on her way back. She looked at Xavier with a worried expression, “Darling…”
Xavier cut her off coolly, “It’s nothing.”
It sounded like he was trying to comfort Josephine.
Aveline’s eyes narrowed as she watched Xavier and Josephine.
Fiona whispered to Aveline, “Xavier isn’t going to pull some trick, is he?
No, I have to follow them.”
Aveline didn’t stop Fiona, because she was also worried Xavier might use some dirty tricks for Josephine’s sake.
Fiona hurried after them. “I’ll see the officers out on behalf of my client as well. Thank you for your hard work, offi-
cers.”
Xavier looked at her with a half–smile, as if he had seen right through her,
“Laura, like I just said, I know the law.”
Fiona gave him a meaningful smile in return. “Some people know the law, but they still break it. Just like some peo- ple know cheating is wrong, but they still do it.”
Xavier just smiled nonchalantly and didn’t say anything else.
Aveline, Lauren, and Rupert were about to go back into the hospital room. When Josephine tried to follow, Aveline turned and said to her coldly:
“Stay away from me.”
Josephine looked aggrieved. “Sister, don’t be like this. I’m not siding with our paternal cousin over you, I just think

Besides, I want to know if your concussion is any better, so I can go back and tell Dad and my mom. They’re worried about you too.”
Aveline laughed. “Josephine, I’m really curious how you developed such a thick skin, to be able to say such insincere things.”
Even with Rupert there, Aveline had no intention of saving Josephine’s face for his sake. Because that fall, if she had- n’t been lucky, could have killed her.
If she died, what would her maternal grandparents do? They wouldn’t be able to go on living.
Rupert’s expression darkened slightly. He didn’t say anything and let the butler help him into the room.
But Lauren frowned and scolded Aveline, “That’s your sister. It’s not proper to talk to her like that in a hospital.”
Aveline kept her cold gaze fixed on Josephine’s disgusting, on–the–verge–of–tears expression. She didn’t look at Lau- ren, but she replied,
“She’s Jacob’s illegitimate daughter.”
Lauren was reminded of this and was left speechless.
Then she waved at Josephine. “Alright, alright, she doesn’t want to see you. Just go away, don’t come here and annoy her.”
Aveline and Lauren went into the hospital room and closed the door.
Josephine’s expression changed instantly. Her eyes turned dark and hostile.
Benjamin came over. “Josie, Xavier just told you it’s nothing. Is he going to put in a good word for me with the offi- cer?”
The implication was, would Xavier use improper means?
Josephine didn’t think Xavier was likely to do something like that for Benjamin, but to placate him, she replied,
“Maybe.”
Josephine pursed her lips and smiled maliciously. “I think it’s time for my dad to make an appearance.”
