She had seen that look on his face before, on the day Xavier went to Bryan to reconfirm who had saved him.

Xavier faced the window, as if enveloped by a powerful, cold air.

After a long moment, he said, “Give Bryan ten million, send him abroad. He’s not to come back for two years.”

The driver, Amy, was so shocked to hear Xavier’s order that her eyes went wide.

Looks like things were bad.

But she always just followed orders. If Mr. Beltran wanted her to know something, he’d tell her. If not, she wouldn’t ask.

“Mr. Beltran, should I send him to a specific place?”

Xavier said coolly, “Anywhere he wants. Just get him out of the country. He’s not to contact anyone back home for the next two years.”

“He comes back only when I say so.”

“Yes, Mr. Beltran. I’ll get on it right away.”

After Amy left, Xavier stood at the window for a long moment, gazing outside. Then he pulled out his phone and called Rebecca.

“Josephine is attending the Patriarch’s birthday banquet tomorrow night. Help her get an outfit and some jewelry. I’ll pay for it.”

Rebecca was surprised, since this was the first time Mr. Beltran had ever asked her to do something like this, but she just said, “Of course, Mr. Beltran.”

“Mr. Beltran, what about the brand and price range…?”

“Whatever Josephine likes is fine. Any brand, any price.”

“I understand, Mr. Beltran. I’ll contact a stylist right away.”

Josephine and Gerald came back from Mount Ardwood. They had lunch together before Josephine headed home.

Courtney had just finished lunch and was sitting in the living room eating some fruit. She asked, “How’s Eileen?”

Josephine sat down next to her mom, her face grim. “You think I don’t know Eileen? She’s just desperate to get out, so she lied about being assaulted.”

“There’s no evidence. Gerald can’t do anything for her.”

Courtney frowned. “She’s getting out tomorrow anyway, and she’s still pulling stunts like this.

“Didn’t you say you were going to ask Xavier for help?”

Josephine’s expression soured even more. She bit her lip and didn’t say anything.

Seeing her reaction, Courtney quickly asked, “What’s wrong?”

“I feel like Xav is being a little weird. Aveline probably went crying to Rupert again.”

“But I just called him ‘darling‘ in a text, and he actually minded. He reminded me not to call him that.”

“It’s not like I said it to his face in public. It was just a text. It’s not like anyone else can see his phone.”

Courtney held an apple slice, her expression grim as she thought. “This Aveline is much tougher to handle than Bethany was.”

“You already convinced Xavier that Aveline wasn’t the one who saved his life, and yet she still managed to get him to marry her, and they even officially registered the marriage. Hmph, Aveline is a real piece of work, not as innocent as she acts.”
