“Leona took this?”

But she told herself that Xavier wouldn’t get angry at her. She was just testing the waters. If he didn’t want to give it to her, then so be it.

“Leona thought the painting was beautiful, so she took a picture of it.”

“Tonight at the bar, we were talking about the Alfred painting I gave to the Patriarch, and Leona showed me this photo.”

Xavier’s gaze shifted from the phone screen to Josephine’s face. “You gave a painting by Alfred to the Patriarch.”

Josephine nodded. “Yes, it was from my dad’s collection.”

Xavier didn’t say anything else and walked toward his apartment door.

Josephine gritted her teeth and said from behind him, “Xavier, I really like that painting in your study. Can you give it to me?”

Xavier stopped and slowly turned around, his expression indifferent. “Do you know who the artist of that painting is?”

Josephine froze, then worried that if she said she knew it was Bethany’s painting, Xavier might think she had ulterior motives for wanting it.

So she shook her head. “I don’t know. I just genuinely like it, and I happen to be looking for a painting to hang in my bedroom. I think that one would be perfect.”

“I just took a picture of a painting, what are you so angry about?”

“Is that painting so delicate that it’ll shatter if you touch it or take a picture of it?”

“Are you and Josie on your way, or are you home?”
