Aveline’s expression turned cold. [Xavier, I’m divorcing you. Once we’re divorced, I won’t be Valentina’s aunt any- more.]
In the conference room, Xavier frowned slightly as he read the message. I just asked her to pick up Valentina from school, he thought. Is it really worth threatening divorce over?
He replied, [We’re not divorced yet. For today, you’re still Valentina’s aunt.]
[Go now. Valentina is going to cry if she doesn’t see anyone there to pick her up.]
Aveline wanted to ask Xavier why he didn’t have Josephine go, but she dropped the idea when she remembered Valentina wasn’t close to Josephine.
Thinking that school was already over, and that Valentina was probably crying while waiting for an adult to pick her up, Aveline grew anxious.
She grabbed her phone and stood up, saying, “I have to go pick up Valentina from kindergarten.”
Jasmine and Julian looked at her, stunned.
Jasmine asked, “Didn’t someone from the go get her?”
Aveline grabbed her purse, “Her parents are out of the country, and Xavier is in a meeting.”
Jasmine frowned, “What about the other Beltrans?”
“I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m going to get her first.”
Aveline put her phone in her purse and walked toward the door.
Julian quickly asked, “What about the business dinner with Bernard?”
Aveline turned back and said, “You guys go first. I’ll get Valentina settled and then I’ll head right over.”
After saying that, she opened the door and hurried out.
When she got to the kindergarten, Valentina’s eyes were indeed red. A female teacher was comforting her. Seeing Aveline, Valentina immediately ran toward her.
“Auntie.”
Aveline knelt down and hugged her, “I’m sorry, Valentina, Auntie is late.”
Valentina shook her head, her voice choked with sobs, “Uncle said he would come pick me up. Why didn’t he come?”
All the other children had been picked up by their parents, leaving her all alone. It was the first time this had hap-

pened, and she felt awful.
“Uncle is stuck in a meeting, so Auntie came to get you instead.”
“Okay, no more crying. Say goodbye to your teacher, we should go.”

Valentina sniffled, pulled away from Aveline’s embrace, and turned to wave goodbye to the teacher.
Aveline also thanked the teacher, then took Valentina’s hand and left the kindergarten.
Once in the car, Aveline immediately called Xavier. It rang a few times before he answered.
“Did you get Valentina?”
“I got her. Should I take her to The Croft Tower?”
Xavier replied, “Just have her stay with you for now. I’ll pick her up later.”
Aveline frowned, “I have a business dinner tonight, I can’t take her with me.”
Xavier asked back, “Will there be drinking?”
Aveline didn’t answer him, which was a silent confirmation.
Xavier said, “Then take her to the Beltran Hotel.”
Just then, Josephine’s voice came through the phone, “darling, I booked the Chinese restaurant… oh, you’re on the phone.”
Aveline’s hand holding the phone tightened, and she remained silent.
Xavier hummed in what seemed to be a response to Josephine, then he said, “When you get there, if I haven’t arrived yet, just wait in the lobby for a bit. I’m on my way.”
Aveline said nothing and hung up directly, then started the car.
Sitting in the back seat, Valentina looked at Aveline’s profile, which seemed unhappy, and asked, “Auntie, are you an- gry?
Is it because you have a business dinner and can’t take me with you?”
Aveline quickly softened her expression and said gently, “Auntie isn’t angry because of you.”
“Then what is it? Is it because of Uncle?”
“Yes.”
