Aveline replied to him, “Collin, I know. I only said that because I was angry about how Jacob wronged Mom. I was just talking, I couldn’t actually do it, and it’s impossible anyway.”

She hesitated for a moment, and didn’t mention that Xavier had traded a villa worth millions to Alfred for a painting.

If she told them, her maternal grandparents would think even more highly of Xavier, and might even feel she shouldn’t divorce him.

After breakfast, Aveline drove her blue Porsche to Parkview Estates.

As soon as she entered the villa, she saw the black Bentley. It looked like Xavier had come back here last night.

Have you had breakfast?”

Aveline walked up the steps and replied, “I’ve eaten.”

Entering the house, she saw Amy coming out of the dining room. “Ma’am.”

Aveline nodded. “Good morning.”

Then she went straight upstairs.

Halfway up, she thought of something and asked Helena, “The Property Deed is in the safe, right?”

Aveline nodded and went upstairs to her bedroom to get the painting and the Property Deed.

As she opened the master bedroom door and walked in, she saw Xavier lying asleep on the bed The room smelled of alcohol.

Obviously, Xavier had been drinking here last night, and then he’d gotten into her bed to sleep without even changing his clothes.

It seemed her movements disturbed Xavier. His previously peaceful, handsome face creased into a slight frown as he turned over and went back to sleep.

Aveline stared at him with a cold expression, really wanting to kick him.

But if she kicked him awake, he’d just find new ways to annoy her. It was better to just grab her things and leave.

So Aveline tiptoed into the walk–in closet and opened the safe.

After taking the Property Deed, she walked out of the closet to get the painting.

The painting was hanging on the wall, too high for Aveline to reach. She had to move a chair over and stand on it to get it.

While moving the chair, she was terrified of waking Xavier up, acting cautiously and glancing at

him from time to time.

Xavier was sound asleep, not moving a muscle.

Aveline slowly got on the chair, stood up straight, and raised her hands to take the painting.

She didn’t notice that the moment she stepped on the chair, Xavier woke up. He sat up, watching her every move, and then frowned slightly.

The moment Aveline took the painting off the wall, she felt a pair of large hands grab her waist.

She was startled and let out an instinctive “Ah!”

Xavier said in a deep voice, “What are you ‘ah‘–ing about? Don’t you know how dangerous this is? What if you fall?”

“Why didn’t you wake me up to help you get it?”

Aveline said irritably, “Let go. I want to get down.”
